Proximate, Fatty Acids (FA) and element compositions of two shrimp species, deep seawater rose-shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) and golden shrimp (Plesionika martia), were determined. Amount of lipid in P. longirostris and P. martia was found as 1.1 and 2.61%. Proportion of lipid in both shrimps was lower than that of marine fish. Surprisingly, FA profile of these 2 shrimp species can be comparable with that of marine fish. The amounts of PUFA’s in both shrimp species were found higher than those of SFA and MUFA. Level of DHA in P. longirostris was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of P. martia. In addition, major macro elements found in both of the shrimp species were Ca, K, Na, P and Mg. Zinc and iron were the major micro elements followed by Cu and Mn. Heavy metals such as, Cd and Cr, were in below the safe limits.

The pattern of taxonomic relationships and morphological divergence of three three species of shrimp, Penaeus semisulcatus, Metapenaeus monoceros and Melicertus kerathurus, collected from Iskenderun Bay, were investigated. A multivariate ANOVA using morphometric characters revealed highly significant inter-sample variation for most of the characters. In discriminant function analysis, the first discriminant function accounted for 77% and the second accounted for 23% of the between-group variability, showing clear between-species differentiation. Examination of the contribution of each variable to the first two discriminant functions showed high contributions from measurements 1_2, 4_5, 11_12, 8_11, 8_9, 4_15 in the first function, and 7_12, 3_16, 3_4, 12_13, 8_12 in the second function, indicating that these characters are key characters in discriminating between these species. The UPGMA cluster analysis produced two main clustering; Melicertus kerathurus was closest taxa to Penaeus semisulcatus being the sister group to the Metapenaeus monoceros which was the most divergent in this group. In the correct assignment of individuals into their original sample, the proportion of correctly classified the Metapenaeus monoceros to their original group was highest (92%), showing a clear separation from the other species.

Juvenile kuruma prawn, Marsupenaeus japonicus with an initial weight of 1.64±0.69 g were reared on pellets supplemented with 300, 600 and 1200 mg kg-1 L-carnitine for 8 weeks in 1.2 m diameter round concrete tanks. The results showed that L-carnitine supplementation did not influence weight gain and survival rate at the end of the 56 days feeding period compared with the control group (p>0.05). However, muscle proximate composition of the juveniles was significantly affected by L-carnitine supplementation (p<0.05). Lipid level decreased whilst protein content increased in those fed either 300 or 600 mg kg-1 L-carnitine. At the end of the feeding trial, the shrimp exposed to a cold shock to examine their tolerance. No significant effect of L-carnitine on cold tolerance M. japonicus juveniles was observed.
