  This study summarizes results of a research aimed at assessing of preservative treatment of sapwood and heartwood of three important fast growing timber species of Bangladesh i.e., Swietenia macrophylla (mahogony), Albizia saman (raintree) and Acacia auriculiformis (akashmoni) with CCB by dipping method. Heartwood and sapwood of the three species treated with 8% concentration of Chromate-copper-boron (CCB) at 2:2:1 ratio using non-pressure dipping method for 72 h in the laboratory. The treated wood of these three species was inoculated with white-rot fungus (Ceriporiopsis subvermispora) to identify the effectiveness of CCB treatment. It was found that retention of CCB preservatives and penetration of boron was the highest for sapwood (7.29 kg m-3 and 98.63%) and heartwood (4.736 kg m-3 and 84.51%) of raintree among the three species. The weight loss percentage was the lowest for sapwood (0.62%) and heartwood (1.01%) of raintree among the three species. So, it was considered that heartwood and sapwood of raintree was provided best results.

  In vitro culture of lateral buds of field grown mature plants were tested in MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of BAP and NAA. Seasonal endophytic contamination was suppressed by shaking propagules for 2 h in 300 mg L-1 rifampicin before surface sterilization. Maximum survival rate was found in MS medium supplement with 1.0 mg L-1 BAP plus 0.20 mg L-1 NAA. The highest number of shoots was produced in MS medium containing 0.50 mg L-1 BAP and 0.20 mg L-1 NAA. Both the highest multiplication rate and the longest shoot were found in MS medium supplemented with 0.50 mg L-1 BAP plus 0.20 mg L-1 NAA. On the same treatment an increasing trend was observed in multiplication rate of shoot upto 5th subculture which decreased thereafter. First subculture produced the highest shoot length which decreased with the increase in number of subculture. Half strength MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 IBA was found as the best treatment to produce root in the culture media. Rooted plantlets were transplanted successfully.

  The effect of foliar application with 300, 600 and 900 ppm IAA was investigated on yield and yield contributing characters of two varieties of mungbean (BARI 2 and BARI 4). IAA at 600 ppm significantly increased the number of seeds/plant, seed yield plant-1, seed yield (t ha 1) and 1000-seeds weight. The variety BARI 4 manifested better performance than BARI 2. BARI 4 plants treated with 600 ppm of IAA had the highest pod length, number of seeds, seed yield/plant and seed yield (t ha-1 ). So, the plants treated with IAA at 600 ppm performed better than those of control and other treatments.

  The experiment was conducted to find the effect of different cultivars and time of nitrogen application on the growth and yield of separated tillers of transplant aman rice. Tillers of three rice cultivars (BRRI Dhan 32, BR 23 and BR 22) and five timings of nitrogen application were used as treatments. The individual effect of var. BR 23 and the three equal splits of application of nitrogen as basal, at early tillering and at panicle initiation stages gave the best results on plant height, no. of tillers hill-1, no. of leaves hill-1, leaf area index, no. of grains panicle-1, weight of 1000 grains, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index having 121.21 and 122.54 cm, 9.10 and 9.26, 36.72 and 39.91, 4.92 and 4.68, 118.60 and 118.50, 23.98 and 22.33 g, 4.55 and 4.79 t ha-1, 6.15 and 6.60 t ha-1, 10.70 and 11.40 t ha-1, 42.62 and 41.24 %, respectively. The interaction effect of var. BR 23 and T2 was the highest on these parameters. Rice var. BR 23 and three splits of nitrogen application may be used for increasing growth and yield of separated tillers of transplanted aman rice.

  IAA at 600 ppm significantly increased plant height, number of branches/plant, number of leaves/plant, total dry matter, leaf area, leaf area index and crop growth rate. Significant varietal differences were observed in terms of the morpho-physiological characters studied. The variety BARI 4 (V1) manifested better performance than BARI 2 (V2). V1 plants treated with 600 ppm of IAA had the highest plant height, number of leaves, total dry matter, crop growth rate, number of branches, leaf area, leaf area index and relative growth rate. So plants treated with IAA at 600 ppm performed better than those of control and other treatments.
