  The aim of present study was to investigate the bioactivity (antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxicity etc.) of the ethylacetate extract isolated from Streptomyces sp. Aspergillus sp. and Bacillus sp. from sewage of different regions of Bangladesh. The ethylacetate extract of Streptomyces sp., Aspergillus sp. and Bacillus sp. shown modest antibacterial and antifungal activities at the concentration of 200 μg disc-1. The maximum antibacterial and antifungal activities were shown by the Streptomyces sp. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the microbial extracts was between 64 to 128 μg mL-1 against test organisms. Brine srimp lethality bioassay was carried out for cytotoxicity measurement of the extracts and the LC50 values were calculated after probit transformation of the resulting mortality data. All the ethyl acetate extract showed lower cytotoxicity properties (Streptomyces sp. 42.37 μg mL-1, Aspergillus sp. 52.25 μg mL-1 and Bacillus sp. 47.51 μg mL-1) compared with the reference standard Bleomycin (0.41 μg mL-1) and Galic acid (4.53 μg mL-1).

  Banana cultivar ‘Mehersagar’ is a dessert banana clones cultivated all over the country. For the purpose of the production of disease free plantlets suitable for large-scale cultivation in the field, a micropropagation protocol based on multiple shoot regeneration has been established. Highly proliferative cluster of multiple shoots are obtained by culturing shoot tips from ex vitro grown healthy suckers on MS medium with different concentrations and combinations of cytokinins (viz., BAP and KIN), auxins (viz., IBA, NAA and IAA) and coconut water (cw). The efficacy of these supplements on the rate of shoot multiplication was tested. Best results were obtained on MS+0.5 mg L-1 BAP+0.5 mg L-1 KIN+13% cw, where highest average number of shoots per explant was 8.2±0.236. When individual shootlets were separated and implanted in half strength MS medium with various concentrations of auxins, the better root formation were noted at 1.0 mg L-1 IBA with 6.10±0.359 roots per shoot. Then the rooted plantlets were transferred to polybags and about 90% of the acclimatized plantlets were survived when transferred to open field.

  An experiment was conducted to find out a suitable banana (Ranginsagar and Sabari) based intercrop combination of potato and mustard in the research field of Institute of Biological Science of Rajshahi University, Rajshahi-6205, during Rabi season of 2003-2004. Average over the two years, it revealed that the highest yield of banana was observed in Ranginsagar + potato (64.72 t ha-1) and the lowest in sole mustard (1.92 t ha-1). Combinations of Ranginsagar + potato intercropping showed better performance than other combination and sole crop in respect of gross return (Tk. 735219 ha-1), net return (Tk. 359794 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (1.95). The highest land equivalent ratio (LER) was 1.82 in Ranginsagar + Potato followed by Sabari + potato (1.79) and the lowest in Sabari + mustard (1.60). The economic return was more in intercropping than all sole crops.

  The aim of the present study was to investigate the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of five newly synthesized ferrocene based complexes [Mn(FcCOO)2, A], [Co(FcCOO)2, B], [Ni(FcCOO)2, C], [Cu(FcCOO)2, D] and [Zn(FcCOO)2, E]. The maximum antibacterial (at the concentration 100 μg disc-1) and antifungal (at the concentration 200 μg disc-1) activities were shown by the manganese complex A followed by cobalt complex B. The minimum activites were shown by Zink complex E. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the complexes was determined against four pathogenic bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterinum, Escherichia coli and Shigella shiga and the values of complex A were found between 16-32 μg mL-1. Brine shirmp lethality bioassay was carried out and all the complexes also showed cytotoxic effect compared with the standard bleomycin (0.41 μg mL-1).

  Survey method was used to find the effect of shrimp culture on livestock production. The study area is located in the south-western part of Bangladesh in the tidal flood plain near the large mangrove forest, the sundarbans. The average livestock (cattle, goat, sheep, buffalo) number (per farmer), milk production (kg/day/cow), lactation period (day), birth wt. (kg) are significantly higher before shrimp culture compared to after shrimp culture but mortality percentage are significantly higher after shrimp culture compared to before shrimp culture. Livestock population and its overall conditions were better before shrimp culture compared with after shrimp culture. The study has revealed that the production of livestock have been affected following the shrimp farming practices in the study areas. Shrimp farming interacts with the environment and its expansion destroyed whole ground in coastal region.

  Experiments were carried out to find the effect of Diazinon-60 EC and Dimecron-100 SCW on Diaptomus. The Diamptmus were exposed to various concentrations of Diazinon-60 EC and Dimecron-100 SCW. The median lethal concentrations of Diazinon-60 EC and Dimecron-100 SCW for 48 hours of exposure on Diaptomus were 0.3530 and 1.2809 ppm respectively.

  The effects of various cytokinins (viz., BAP and KIN), auxins (viz., IBA, NAA and IAA) and coconut water (CW) alone or in combinations on shoot multiplication of banana cv. Anupom were investigated. The rate of multiplication varied in different treatments. Among the treatments, MS medium supplemented with 5.0 mg L-1 each of BAP + KIN and 13% coconut water produced the highest number of shoot per explant (5.8±0.154). The number of shoots responded for rooting and their survivability were found higher with IBA than NAA and IAA. MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 IBA produced the highest number of roots per shoot (7.±0.245). Plantlets grown without any auxin in the medium gave the least number of roots/shoot (2.60±0.219). The rooted plantlets were successfully transferred in the polybags and finally were well established in the field.

Brine shirmp bioassay lethality was carried out for cytotoxicity measurements of the complexes and the LC50 values were calculated after probit transformation of the resulting mortality data. Among the five complexes manganese complex A was showed highest cytotoxic effect which is indicative of its probable effect on cancer cell lines.

  In the present experiment volume, concentration, mass movement and forward movement of semen of different genotypes of bulls relating to body weight, age, sexual maturity and season were evaluated. A total of 1422 semen samples from 22 different bulls of seven genotypes were included in this study from Central Cattle Breeding Station (CCBS), Shavar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Among the seven genotypes of bulls, only the Friesian bulls gave the largest volume of semen (14.26 ± 0.19 mL), mass movement (4.87 ± 0.07 grade) and forward movement (61.29 ± 0.31%) of sperm. While considering the age, the bulls of 4 to 6 years old provided the highest semen volume (13.60 ± 0.18 mL), sperm concentration (1219.89 ± 10.72 million sperm mL-1), mass movement (4.66 ± 0.06 grade) and forward movement (61.34 ± 0.28%) of sperm. The highest volume (12.01 ± 0.22 mL) of semen, sperm concentration (1182.29 ± 14.30 million sperm mL-1), mass movement (4.40 ± 0.08 grade) and forward movement (58.74 ± 0.54%) of sperm was found in 3 years age of sexual maturity. In case of body weight, the maximum volume of semen (12.16 ± 0.22 mL) and forward movement (60.25 ± 0.45%) of sperm was obtained in the bulls of 400 to 600 kg body weight and the volume was maximize (12.15 ± 0.23 mL) in summer season. The findings suggested that Friesian produced better quality semen than other genotypes while 4 to 6 years age and >600 to 700 kg body weight of bulls performed better than other age and body weight groups. The summer season gave better quality semen than other seasons.
