  This study presents an overview of optical communication in the emerging world of telecommunication technologies. Some network approaches in achieving the potentials of the optical communication have been highlighted. Increased focus on photonics is drastically revolutionizing communication systems and is expected to form the next generation of information based technologies with optical communication base. With increased demand on bandwidth, optical network will continue to play a leading role in the future success of telecommunication which is the driving force of globalization.

  The performance of any equipment or network is of great importance. Key performance indicators are the indices for finding out how well the telephone switches in Calabar Nigeria are performing. Measurements and analyses were taken at the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), Calabar exchange using Electronic Digital Switching system (EWSD) equipment. It was found that not up to 50 calls out of a 100 were effectively carried even though the call completion rates were very high. Key teletraffic performance and key traffic events have indicators been determined for the public telephone switches in Calabar, Nigeria.

  Performance test carried out along the Calabar-EPZ Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) Digital Exchange Route shows good agreement of signal strength. The result also shows that the route is in a very good condition. It also shows that voice transmission along this route has good voice clarity with a Bit Error Rate (BER) in order of 10-3 which requires a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of about 16 dB to achieve the error performance level. The route has a bandwidth of about 34 MHz, which makes transmission faster along this route and makes it easy to carry other transmission data. Findings show that the network manageability of this route is very good.

  Measurements and analyses of telephone in public switches in Calabar were undertaken in Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), Calabar exchange. Data collected from 6 routes were analysed. Results show that the answer-bid ratio for the routes was in the range 9.70-47.40, answer-seizure ratio, 10.10-47.80 and call completion ratio, 77.70-100. This means that not up to half the number of calls were effectively carried, thereby implying poor performance compared to international evaluation indices.

  The Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) analogue exchange route that has been studies is Calabar-Ogoja. Result showed good agreement of signal strength. It also shows that the assessed analogue route has a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of 30 dB as against expected figure of about 40 dB. It shows the transmission equipment working condition is approaching its tolerance limits due to aging. It was also found that the network manageability of this route is very poor.
