  Since jute is the main cash crop of the farmers, they had to sale jute in order to meet family needs. As a result the low market price and low demand of jute have been the major problems of the jute growers. The third and fourth problems were "inadequate knowledge of the farmers in grading jute fibre" with problem index 339 and "no price incentive for quality fibre at primary market" with problem index 320 and rank order 3 and 4 respectively. Farmers do not receive remunerative prices due to high quality fibres in primary market. Because of non-availability of high yielding variety (HYV) jute seeds on the sowing period, farmers are not interested in HYV jute cultivation. "Farmers inability to purchase costly seed" and "lack of adequate knowledge of improved technologies on jute cultivation" had a problem index of 278 and 255 respectively. During the sowing period, price of HYV jute seed becomes high and goes beyond the purchasing capacity of small farmers. Farmers suggested solutions to the problems faced are fixing fair price of jute at farm level that are remunerative to them and adequate arrangement for supply of HYV seeds at sowing period.

  Two experiments were conducted in the laboratory with leaves of one plant species (Blumea lacera Dc.) Shiyalmutra or Kukurshunga for studying their repellency and toxicity test against the lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica F.) and rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.; Bastrychidae:Coleoptera) with the attempt for chemical investigation of each extract. In the first experiment petroleum ether extract of dried leaves (1, 2 and 3% by volume) were used on the adult beetle of lesser grain borer and rice weevil to evaluate their repellency for mortality/direct toxicity effects. Results for the two experiments indicated that 1, 2 and 3% petroleum ether extract of leave of Blumea lacera Dc. species had repellency as well as direct toxicity, while 3% showed strong repellency and toxicity effects among the other extracts on both lesser grain and rice weevil.

  An on-farm experiment was conducted to know the performance of Leaf Color Chart (LCC) based N application in rice compared with conventional farmers practice during aman season 2002 in nine farmer ’ s field at Gazipur districts of Bangladesh. Nine rice genotypes were included in the experiment and each genotype was cultivated in each farmers plot. Basal application of fertilizer was made with P, K, S and Zn. Top dress of N was made according to the treatments. LCC based N application produced slightly higher but insignificant grain yield than conventional farmer’s N application practice. N use efficiency was much higher in LCC based N application. 19-37 kg Nha -1 was saved in LCC and it reduces disease and insect infestation in rice. It plays a positive role on environment by reducing the use of agrochemicals.
