  A field study was conducted to study some cultural treatments to find out an effective method, alternative to spraying of insecticide, for controlling vector to manage jute leaf mosaic disease. Five treatments viz. T1 (Malathion 57 E.C), T2 (field sanitation with rouging), T3 (Hanging of polythene strips), T4 (extra dose of nitrogen) and T5 (control) were assigned randomly having four replications. T2 and T4 showed best performance on all the parameters including leaf mosaic of jute. However, the highest yield of raw jute 3091.5 kg ha-1 and stick 5709.6 ha-1 was obtained from T4 and the second highest 2541.6 kg ha-1 of raw jute and 5039.1 kg ha-1 of stick were obtained in T2. A combination of collection and use of seeds from healthy plants, one insecticidal spray around 30 days after emergence (DAE), combined with field sanitation with rouging several times in the growth period and application of an extra booster dose of nitrogen at around 45 DAE may be prescribed to farmers of Mymensingh region of Bangladesh.

  The morphological characteristics of the fruits and seeds, germination and seedling growth performance of Ipil-Ipil (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de wit.) were studied under different conditions in the nursery. The average length (cm), breath (cm) and number of seed per fruits varied from (19.71±0.08); (2.11±0.03) and (20.08±0.61) as well as seeds, the length (cm), breath (cm), thickness (cm) and dry weight per seeds (g) ranges from (0.83±0.03); (0.55±0.014); (0.169±0.04) and (0.059±0.002). The rate of untreated seed germination was tried in the polybag, seed tray and seedbed. The highest germination was found in polybag under peat with cowdung mixture about (66%) and lowest germination was found in seedbed in all rooting media.

  The study describes the effect of 2 (two) commonly used inorganic fertilizers (Urea and TSP) on Anthocephalus chinensis (Lam.) Rich ex. walp. seedlings in the nursery of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh with a view to standardize an optimum dose of inorganic fertilizers for raising quality seedlings. There were combinations of 16 treatments including a control one (NoPo). Seedlings were supplied 0, 75,175, 300 kg ha -1 of N and P of each in solution form in all possible combinations. Seedlings were evaluated for 13 weeks (90 days) in the nursery. Seedling mortality along with different growth parameters was measured. Different growth variables were also calculated. Seedling growth was in general markedly better for fertilized one in comparison to the control one. Nitrogen addition was found significantly promoting the collar dia. increment and total dry matter production of seedlings. Seedling mortality was observed as the nitrogen dose increases. Significant variation was not observed for different growth variables due to nitrogen doses. However, there was no significant variation in any parameters for different levels of phosphorus applied. The study suggests that application of 175 kg N ha -1 may be beneficial and also addition of 175 kg P ha -1 may boost the diameter, total dry matter production and leaf area of Anthocephalus chinensis on this type of soil (forest top soil collected from Chittagong University Campus).
