  This study was designed to investigate the biochemical and histomorphological changes occurring due to streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus in rabbits. Twelve New Zealand male rabbits of uniform age were divided into two Groups. Group I was made diabetic by single intravenous injection of streptozotocin (@ 65mg/kg.b.w.) whereas Group II served as control. Significant increase in blood sugar (P<0.01), blood urea (P<0.10) and serum creatinine (P<0.10) was recorded in Group I rabbits compared to Group II rabbits. Further, histomorphological alterations of pancreas, kidneys, liver, heart, lungs and brain were observed. However, no pathological features were observed in alimentary canal. From the study, it is concluded that streptozotocin-induced diabetes causes disturbances in biochemical and histological features in rabbits and serves as a model in studying the various complications arising due to this illness.

  An experiment was conducted to study the efficacy of glimepiride (a new sulphonylurea) on the biochemical values and histomorphological features of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rabbits. Eighteen New Zealand white male rabbits were selected for the study. The rabbits were randomly divided into three Groups of six each. Group I was kept as normal healthy control (NC), Group II and Group III were made diabetic by single intravenous administration of streptozotocin (@ 65 mg/kg. b.w.). Glimepiride was given to Group III rabbits by gavage @ 2mg/kg. b.w. daily for twenty-one days whereas Group I and Group II rabbits received normal saline in the similar manner. The results indicated a significant decrease in the blood sugar (P<0.01), blood urea (P<0.001) and serum creatinine (P<0.001) in Group III rabbits. Further, the histomorphological study showed an increase in the percentage of beta cells in pancreatic islets and recovery of renal tubules in Group III rabbits. The findings indicate that glimepiride improves the biochemical values and ameliorates the histopathology of diabetic rabbits particularly restoring the morphology of beta cells of islets of Langerhan`s and thus, seems to be encouraging.

  The study was conducted to assess the pathological status of lymphoid organs in commonly encountered diseases of broiler chickens in Kashmir valley. Three types of disease outbreaks included Infectious bursal disease, Newcastle disease and Collibacillosis were studied. A total of 500 broiler chickens from each disease outbreak were examined. In case of IBD, the gross and histopathological changes were mainly in bursa of Fabricius which included enlargement, oedema, congestion, haemorrhages, necrosis, epithelial desquamation and lymphocyte depletion followed by changes in thymus, spleen, caecal tonsils and Harderian gland. In Newcastle disease, the severity of lesions like enlargement, stippled appearance, congestion, necrosis and lymphocyte depleted areas were more in spleen and caecal tonsils whereas in Collibacillosis the changes were more detectable in spleen viz; enlargement, stippled appearance, congestion and necrotic areas. Qualitative increase was observed in neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides and acid phosphatase activity while alkaline phosphatase showed mild activity in inflammatory epithelial areas of bursa, caecal tonsils and harderian gland in all the three disease outbreaks.
