  Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an ancient malady, which is one of the world’s most wide spread infectious bacterial agents. Fully one-third of the world’s population is already infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with the greatest burden of disease and infection borne by people in developing countries. Tuberculosis disease is still out of control. Alarming spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and emergence of drug resistance is now further complicating the major problem. HIV not only makes the diagnosis of TB more difficult; it contributes to an increase in TB incidence. The rate of breakdown to clinical TB in individuals infected both with HIV and tuberculosis is many times higher than in those without HIV. The present vaccine is not sufficient to reduce the death rate by eradicating TB with HIV/AIDS. The present review is based on the prevention and treatment of TB patient and co-infected with HIV/AIDS and effect of HIV/AIDS on the treatment and prevention of TB. It will help assuming idea about future steps in prevention and treatment of TB among HIV/AIDS patients.

  Two triterpenes, β-Amyrin and 12-Oleanene 3β, 21β-diol, were isolated as a mixture from the chloroform soluble fraction of an ethanolic extract of Duranta repens stem. The structures of these two compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H and 13C-NMR spectral data. In acute toxicity test, the chloroform soluble fraction showed toxic effect on rats but compound 1 (mixture of β-Amyrin and 12-Oleanene 3β, 21β-diol) had no toxic effect on rat at 2 mg/kg/day b.wt. Biochemical and hematological profiles of rat`s blood of chloroform soluble fraction were found statistically significant. In histopathological experiment, some degenerative changes on cellular structure of liver, heart and kidney except lungs were found in chloroform soluble fraction treated rats.

  A Study on quantitative characteristics of fruits of guava germplasm in both on and off seasons was carried out at the germplasm center, Fruit-Tree Improvement Project (FTIP) of the Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during June, 2000 to April, 2001. Different quantitative characters were found statistically significant. In respect of different characters such as fruit size, fruit weight, thickness, weight of mesocarp and endocarp, number of seeds per fruit, percent edible portion. The guava showed better performance in both on and off seasons but fruits of off- seasons were better than that of on seasons. In respect of fruit weight, size, flesh weight, seed per fruit and percent edible portion, the germplasm PG-028, PG-027 and PG-005 were superior among all the germplasm in both the seasons.

  Salmonella infections are major problems for the poultry farming in Bangladesh. The cultural method to identify avian Salmonella infections is laborious and expensive, thus a rapid, sensitive and cost-effective method for the diagnosis of salmonellosis is anticipated. In the present investigation Salmonella pullorum organisms was obtained from the Department of Pathology and it was characterized by culture, biochemical tests and PCR. A neotetrazolium stained Salmonella pullorum antigen was prepared from local isolate of Salmonella pullorum. The protein concentration of stained antigen was measured by BSA standard curve. Prepared antigen was diluted in 2 fold dilution and minimum 72.5 μg/μl antigen concentration showed the positive reaction. Different preservatives (0.5% phenolized saline, 0.5% formalized saline and 0.09% sodium azide) were used to maintain the shelf life of prepared antigen. All the preservatives showed the similar results up to six months. Slide agglutination tests were carried out with un-diluted and diluted anti-sera having known ELISA titre and end point agglutination titre was determined. Serum titre 13942-21362 gave positive result to 2-5 fold dilution of serum and serum titre 412-771 showed negative result. Different groups of antigens were developed while antigen group-1 (48 h bacterial culture treated with 24 h in neotetrazolium and 2 h in thiomersal) gave the striking positive result. As Group-1 antigen exhibited highest protein concentration (1240 μg/μl) and gave the best result with positive sera, so it was selected for field trial. The seroprevalence of Salmonella infection was 44.39% in a particular poultry farm. The stained antigen was then stored at 4oC. As all used preservatives revealed similar trend of results, so it may be recommend that 0.5% phenolized saline as preservative because it is cost effective. In the present study, the slide agglutination test was found easy, sensitive, reliable, cost and time effective and needed very small amount of antigen, sera and as well as accessories. Salmonella pullorum antigen from a local isolate was successfully developed which could be used to screen the Salmonella infection in the poultry flocks at the farm premises. It may also be used to determine the antibody titer of the vaccinated flocks.

  Printing plate is one of the printing component that play an important roles in producing the micro to nano scale printing image for graphic, biomedical and electronic device on variable substrates by using various inks. The Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material was used as printing plate due to low cost material and easy to handle which usually used in producing micro to nano scale image and electronic devices. In this study, the PDMS was developed as a printing plate into the multiple micro to nano scale printing fine solid line onto substrate for micro-flexographic printing machine. Micro-flexographic printing machine was developed by combining the flexographic and micro-contact printing technique. Micro-flexographic was a high speed roll to roll printing technique which could be used in micro to nano scale pattern. This research was successful developed fine solid lines PDMS printing plate below 5 μ. This study illustrates the use of PDMS material as printing plate in producing multiple micro solid lines printing capability for the application of printing graphic, electronic and bio-medical purpose.

  The site-specific nutrient requirement of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) and companion crops, viz. onion (Allium cipa) and lentil (Lens culinaris) in sugarcane based cropping systems field experiments was determined under two Agro-ecological zones (AEZ), namely High Barind Tract (AEZ 26) and Tista Meander Floodplain soils (AEZ 3). The application of fertilizers for sugarcane and intercrops, onion and lentil as per soil test basis followed by dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) significantly increased cane yield to the extent of 19 % at AEZ 26 and 45 % at AEZ 3 over the sole cane crop. Maximum cane yield (119 t ha–1) with highest BCR of Tk.4.37 was found in High Barind Tract with the application of N190 + P44 + K65 + S25 + Zn3.5 kg ha–1 to sugarcane and N55 + P18 + K25 + S6 kg ha–1 to potato. In Tista Meander Floodplain soils, application of N120 + P40 + K75 + S20 + Zn2 + Mg15 kg ha–1 and N15 + P5 + K6 + S3 kg ha–1to sugarcane and lentil, respectively produced the highest yield of 117 t ha–1 with BCR of Tk.4.25. Green manure Sesbania aculeata increased cane yields about 2 to 9 per cent and contributed 56 - 66 kg N ha–1.

  Anthers of three rice cultivars having late uninucleate microspores were studied for induction of haploid rice plants. Anthers were cultured on Z2 medium supplemented with various combinations and concentrations of auxins and kinetin (cytokinin). The best callusing from cultured anthers obtained in 2 medium containing 2,4-D 2 mg l-1, NAA 2.5 mg l-1 and kin 0.5 mg l-1. For regeneration of haploid plantlets anther derived calli were transferred to modified MS medium enriched with kin 1 mg l-1, NAA 1 mg l-1, BAP 1.0 ml l-1 and incubated at 25±1OC in light. BRRI Dhan-29 produced both green and albino plants while BR-3 produced green plants only. Green plantlets obtained from BRRI Dhan-29 were examined and found to be 69.2% haploid plants.

  Regeneration of multiple shoots via callus induction and organogenesis was achieved from cotyledon explants of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). Callus induction and shoot regeneration at various frequencies were observed using different concentrations and combinations of growth regulators. Highest percentage (95) of callus formation was observed on MS+ 3.0 mg l–1 2, 4-D+3.0 mg l–1 BAP. The maximum percentage (40) of shoot bud formation was obtained on MS medium fortified with 2.0 mg l–1 BAP and 0.5 mg l–1 NAA with number of shoots per callus was 2.50. The regenerated shoots developed highest percentage (77) roots on ½ MS basal medium containing 1.0 mg l–1 IBA. Regenerated plants were successfully established in soil after acclimatization. Maximum survivability after 4 weeks of transplantation was achieved in 21 days old rooted shoots on garden soil.

  The efficacy of three fungicides viz. Tilt 250 EC, Bavistin, Pencozeb and botanicals viz. Allium sativum (clove), Nigella sativa (seed), Lawsonia alba (leaf) and Cymbopogon citratus (oil) were evaluated for leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokiniana) and grain yield of wheat cv. Kanchan under field condition. All the fungicides showed significant effect in controlling leaf blight of wheat cv. Kanchan. The highest reduction of the disease was recorded in plots that received Tilt 250 EC (0.1%) followed by Pencozeb (0.2%). Maximum grain yield of 3.89 t/ha with the gross margin of US$ 881.24/ha which 22.80% increase over the control was obtained by using Tilt which was followed by Pencozeb (10.01%). Among botanicals, leaf extract of Lawsonia alba resulted an increase of gross margin of US$ 731.78/ha which is 1.98% increase over the untreated control. Tilt 250 EC, Bavistin, Pencozeb and Lawsonia alba showed 13.16, 3.71, 9.31 and 8.39 BCR, respectively, while others resulted negative response.
