  Transient expression of the GUS gene has been demonstrated in somatic callus of the two varieties of Carica papaya cv. Shahi and Ranchi after co-cultivation with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA-4404 carrying a binary plastid vector system containing neomycin phosphotransferase gene as the selectable marker and -glucuronidase (GUS) as reporter gene. The mature embryonal axes were used as explants. The co-cultivated explants were transferred into final selection medium containing 500 mg L -1 carbenicillin + 200 mg L -1 cefotaxime + 50 mg L -1 kanamycin. The callus of C. papaya cv. Shahi showed highestGUS activity compared to C. papaya cv. Ranchi. The anatomical section of callus showed the positive GUS activity. All transformed callus grew vigorously in this medium and formed embryos followed by plantlets.

  The treatments comprised of four sizes of seedling tubers viz. 5.0, 7.5, 12.5 and 17.5 g derived from the TPS progeny HPS II/67 and four depths of planting viz. surface level, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 cm with their all possible combinations. Seedling tuber size significantly influenced the growth and yield of potato. Yield was found to increase with the increase in seedling tuber size and the maximum yield (39.34 t/ha) was obtained from the large seeds (17.5g). Depth of planting had no significant effect on the growth and yield of potato. The combined effect of seedling tuber size and planting depth revealed that the maximum yield per hectare (39.42 t/ha) was obtained from the large seedling tuber (17.5 g) with the planting depth of 5.0 cm. Economic analysis indicated that the best economic return was obtained from 17.5 g seedling tubers planted at a depth of 7.5 cm.

  An investigation was carried out to study the floral biology of different Carica species. Early flowering was occurred in C. cauliflora both male and female flowers after transplanting of the seedlings and male flower emerged earlier compared to female flower of different Carica species. The tallest rachis of male inflorescence was obtained from C. papaya cv. Shahi. The male flower buds of C. papaya cv. Ranchi took the highest time from initiation to dehiscence and the maximum time was required from initiation to receptivity in C. papaya cv. Shahi. The anthers dehiscence of all species were increased with the increasing the temperature up to 12 p.m. during the study. The maximum female flower opening was observed in C. cauliflora at 8-9 a.m. The opening of flowers Shahi and Ranchi were gradually increased from 6 to 8 a.m. and declined after 8 to 11 a.m. The cent percent fruit set was recorded in C. cauliflora on the day of anthesis and the fruit sets were decreased with increasing the anthesis period up to 5 days after anthesis. No fruit set was found at 6 days after anthesis.

  The study was conducted to determine the profitability of alternate rice-fish culture from the viewpoint of small, medium and large farmers. In total 80 alternate rice-fish producing farmers in which 24 small, 44 medium and 12 large farmers were purposively selected from each of the selected strata from three villages under Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district for the study. The study showed that the alternate rice-fish culture was a profitable business. Per hectare costs of alternate rice-fish culture were Tk 46656.25, 47079.26 and 54268.74 for small, medium and large farms, respectively. Per hectare yield of fish, under small, medium and large farms were 1123.85, 1076.92 and 1179.80 kg, respectively and their corresponding yields of rice were 4323, 4491 and 4512 Kg. The average per hectare net returns from alternate rice-fish culture were Tk 27463.50, 28226.33 and 31018.61 for the small, medium and large farms, respectively.

  Physio-morphological characteristics of 30 local accessions of pummelo were studied at the existing plantation of the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Ishurdi, Pabna during the period from October 2000 to October 2001. Among the 30 local pummelo accessions, accession number 6, 8, 10, 15, 17 and 22 were found better in respect of fruit characteristics compared to the rest of the accessions. The plants of accession number 8 bore the maximum number of fruits (52.66) and plants of accession number 5 bore the minimum number of fruits (13.00). The fruit of accession number 27 was the heaviest (2160 g) whereas accession number 7 produced the smallest fruits (718.33 g). Fruits of accession number 6 contained the highest TSS (9.66%). The edible qualities of accession number 6, 8, 15, 17, 21 and 22 were found better compared to others. All most all the characteristics viz. fruits plant‾1, fruit weight, fruit diameter. rind thickness, number of segments fruit‾1. TSS percentage with eating quality of fruit were preferable in accession number 22.
