  Two field experiments were conducted during 1998 and 1999 rainy seasons at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto Dry Land Farm, Sokoto (Latitude 13° 09`N and Longitude 5° 18`E), with a view to studying nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on growth, yield components and calyx/seed yields of roselle. Treatments consisted of four levels each of N (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg N ha-1) and P (0, 10, 20 and 30 kg P ha-1), which were combined factorially in a randomized complete block design, replicated three times. Data were collected on plant height, calyx and seed yield of roselle. Results showed that plant height responded significantly to both nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization. Plants treated with 40 and 60 kg N ha-1 were significantly taller than plants that were fertilized at 0 and 20 kg N ha-1, whereas P rates at 10 and 20 kg ha-1 produced the tallest plants than the other P rates. Calyx and seed yields increased with increasing rates of N and P fertilizers up to 60 kg N and 30 kg P ha-1.

  Two field experiments were conducted during 1998 and 1999 rainy seasons at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto Dry Land Farm, Sokoto, with a view to studying the effect of sowing date, planting distance, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization and cultivar on growth, yield components and calyx/seed yields of roselle. The treatments consisted of three sowing dates (7th and 20th July and 3rd August in 1998; 14th and 28th July and 11th August in 1999), two cultivars (Sokoto Red and Sokoto White) and four planting distances (60x60, 60x45, 60x30 and 60x15 equivalent to 27,777, 37,037, 55,555 and 111, 111 plants ha-1, respectively). Factorial combinations of the treatment were laid out in a randomized complete block design in a split-plot arrangement, replicated three times. Analysed data showed that the cultivar Sokoto Red was superior to Sokoto white in both growth attributes as well as calyx and seed yields. The results also revealed that early sown roselle was more vigorous in growth as expressed by plant height, leaf area index and crop growth rate than latter sowings. Early sown roselle also had significantly higher (p<0.01) calyx and seed yield ha-1. Plant growth yield and their attributes were significantly influenced by plant population. Individual plants at wide intra-row spacings (60x60 and 60x45 cm) produced higher number of pods as well as calyx and seed, but on per unit land area basis, were out-yielded by those at close intra-row spacings (60x30 and 60x15 cm).

  The associations among growth and yield components and their direct and indirect influence on the bulb yield of onion were investigated. For this purpose, experiments were laid out which consisted of four levels of nitrogen (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N ha-1), three levels of phosphorus (0, 17.5 and 35 kg P ha-1) and four intra-row spacing (10, 15, 20 and 25 cm), laid out in a split-plot design. Correlation and path coefficient analysis in onion showed that cured bulb yield had significant positive correlation with plant height, number of leaves per plant, bulb diameter and bulb weight but had negative association with percentage-culled bulbs. Path analysis indicated that bulb diameter, plant height and number of leaves per plant were the principal component of yield.
