  Two growth chamber experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of defoliation on the growth and development of peanuts. In Experiment one, peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L., cv. Flogiant) were uniformly defoliated by hand at 25, 50, 75 and 100% at the pod or the pod-filling stage. In experiment two, 25 and 75% of the young leaves were removed by hand at the vegetative or the pod-performing stage. Results of these study showed that defoliation lowered the leaf, stem, root, peg and pod masses. The growth stage of the plants determines the variables that would be most affected. The reduction in mass due to defoliation lasted for four to six weeks when defoliation were at the pod-forming or the pod-filling stage and about two to three weeks when 25% of the young leaves were removed at the vegetative stage. Plants defoliated at the 75% level gave greater priority for peg and pod growth than plants defoliated at the 25% level. Defoliated plants have the lighter pods at harvest.

  An experiment was carried out to study the effect of barley/peanut intercropping on the interspecies competition, growth and yield performance of the crops. The barley was considered as main crop and peanut as intercrop. The experiment comprised of four treatments viz., (i) SB, sole barley, (ii) SP, sole peanut, (iii) BP1, barley/peanut alternate intercrop (one row of barely and one row of peanut, alternately) and (iv) BP2, one row of barley with two rows of peanut intercrop. The plant height, leaf number, tiller or branch number per plant, leaf area index, total dry matter per plant and grain or seed yield were significantly affected by the different intercropping systems and were maximum in SB as well as in SP while those were minimum in BP1. Maximum grain yield of peanut (3.21 t ha-1) was harvested from its sole cropping followed by that of BP2 (2.39 t ha-1). The barley yield was declined by 56% in BP2 and that of peanut yield by 26% compared to their respective sole crops. However, intercropping of peanut with barley exhibited a remarkable change in land equivalent ratio (LER). The highest LER (1.18) was obtained from BP2 followed by BP1 (1.07) intercropping, i.e., land-use efficiency was increased by 18% for BP2 and 7% for BP1. The LERs exhibit that both the intercropping systems are encouraging for harvesting more seed yield. Barley equivalent yield (ca. 6.20 t ha-1) was maximum for the BP2 followed by BP1 intercropping (ca. 4.56 t ha-1). The competitive ratio of each stand approached unity indicates that barley-peanut association effectively balanced the competition between both species. These results strongly suggest that peanut can profitably be intercropped with barley as one row of barley with two rows of peanut.

  A research work was undertaken following oral doses of doxycycline and calcium with feed for 35 days from January to March, 2002, to study the adverse effect, hematological parameters, serum calcium level and post mortem changes in five groups (A, B, C, D and E) of Swiss albino mice (n=25). Among these groups of mice group A was kept as control. Group B was treated only with doxycycline @ 500 mg kg-1 feed but groups C, D and E was given calcium @ 400 mg, 800 mg & 1200 mg kg-1 feed respectively in addition to doxycycline @ 500 mg kg-1 feed. All the treated groups of mice showed clinical signs like roughness of the body, depression, anorexia, weakness, staggering gait, recumbency at latter stage of the study period but these clinical signs were mild in calcium supplemented groups of mice. No visible adverse effect found in the offspring of any group of mice. Administration of doxycycline resulted significant decrease in total erythrocyte count (TEC), hemoglobin content (Hb%), percentage of neutrophil count & serum calcium level in all treated mice but calcium supplementation gradually improved these results in groups C, D & E respectively. Following post mortem examination, all the visceral organs were found to be highly congested and blood was blackish in colour in group B whereas mild or no congestion was found in calcium supplemented group, i.e., groups C, D & E. From the findings of the present study it may be concluded that long term administration of doxycycline results adverse effects as well as decrease serum calcium level. So, when doxycycline is to be administered for long period of time supplementation of calcium should be considered simultaneously.

  To observe the effect of environmentally persistent chemical formalin on the cells of male genital system as well as reproduction an experiment was conducted in the Department of Anatomy and Histology, BAU, Mymensingh-2202, Bangladesh. Ten percent commercial formalin was used in 12 prepubertal male Black Bengal goats. At fifteen days after a single exposure of formalin, atrophy of testes was observed for the first time and at thirty days after exposure the mean weight, length and width of testes were significantly decreased compared to those of control group. In histopathological observation, it was found that the peripheral tubules were more affected than the central ones. In heavily affected areas, the seminiferous tubules were collapsed or shrunk. Focal or complete necrosis was also noticed in different regions of treated testes. In addition, increased connective tissues with macrophage infiltration were also observed in the interstitial region. Mark eosinophilic staining was also observed in the treated testicular tissue. The sloughed and necrosed seminiferous tubules were also found indicating cellular degradation caused by formalin. Further study is also needed to elucidate the exact mechanism of cellular degradation caused by such environmentally persistent chemicals both in vivo and in vitro.

  Histological studies on the arterial wall of main arteries from the ascending aorta to the pectoral and abdomino-inguinal mammary glands of indigenous dogs in different reproductive stages were observed using a light microscope. Based on the histological characteristics and organization of connective tissue fibers and smooth muscle cells in the tunica media, the arterial segments were clearly identified into elastic, transitional and muscular types. Every artery belonging to the three types had different morphological structures at different levels. The artery distant from the heart gradually decreased its elastic lamellae in the tunica media as well as its elasticity and at the periphery of the arterial tree the elastic lamellae were replaced by the smooth muscle cells. The type of the arteries does not depend on the size or diameter of the arteries but depend on the relative distance from the heart. It is assumed that the histological arrangements of tissues in the arterial walls are certainly closely related to the functional demand of the mammary glands.

  The study was to develop models that could be used to make efficient forecast of shrimp and frozen food export earning of Bangladesh. Two types of models, namely, Box-Jenkins type autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and deterministic type growth models, are examined to identify the best forecasting models for shrimp and frozen food export earning of Bangladesh. The study found that the ARIMA (2,2,0) was the best for both shrimp and frozen food export earning. Among the deterministic type models, the quadratic model is best for both the series. The study also reveals that the ARIMA model is more efficient for short-term forecasting than the quadratic model.

  A research work of herbal medicine viz. Neem leaf extract (Azadirachta indica), nayantara leaf extract (Catharanthus roseus) and bitter melon fruit (Momordica charantia) juice with the patent drug gliclazide (Comprid®, Square Pharmaceuticals Bangladesh Ltd.) were studied on blood glucose level, hematological parameters and on body weight in rats. Twenty-five apparently healthy adult rats were randomly divided into 5 equal groups namely A, B, C, D and E. One group (group A) was kept as control. The rest four groups (B, C, D and E) of rats were treated with gliclazide (Comprid®) @ 4.5 mg/kg bd. wt./day, neem leaf extract (NLE) @ 500 mg/kg bd. wt/day, nayantara leave extract (NtLE) @ 500mg/kg bd. wt./day and bitter melon fruit juice @ 500 mg/kg b. wt./day respectively for 14 consecutive days. Blood glucose levels were significantly (P<0.01) reduced in all treated four groups of rats (39.78-44.31%) in comparison to their pre-treatment values. Total erythrocyte count (TEC), total leukocyte count (TLC) and differential leukocyte count (DLC) were not changed significantly in any treated group (B, C, D & E). Eosinophil and monocytes and hemoglobin contents were decreased significantly (P<0.01) in all groups. Among the herbal drugs used in the study bitter melon fruit juice was more effective (7.45%) in increasing the body weight in comparison with other herbal preparations i.e. NtLE (7.4%) and NLE (4.86%). From the present study, it may be further revealed that although the patent drug gliclazide was found to be highly effective, as blood glucose lowering agent, but the efficacy of three different combined form of herbal preparations was also seemed to be encouraging.
