  A study was conducted to determine the relationship between Plasma Alkaline Phosphatase (PAP) activity and reproductive traits in two strains of Rhode Island chickens. Mean enzyme activity in the cocks was 133.07 I.U for strain A and 134.78 I.U for strain B. Values of percentage fertile (PCF), percentage hatch (PCH) and percentage hatchability (PCHBLT) were 80.47, 45.68 and 53.41 in strain A, corresponding values in strain B were 85.94, 51.79 and 56.67. Heritability estimate was high for PAP in both strains (0.57) but low to moderate values were obtained for reproductive traits except percent fertility in strain A (0.56). Genetic correlations between PAP and PCF, PCH and PCHBLT were high and negative in strain A but low and positive values except PCHBLT were obtained in strain B. Phenotypic correlations between PAP and PCF, PCH and PCHBLT were generally low in magnitude but follow the direction of genetic correlations. The enzyme activity can be useful in the selection of the cocks for improved fertility and or hatchability of fertile eggs.

  The aim of present study to compare the egg weight characteristics of quail, duck and brown strain chicken using the hotelling T2 statistics and to study the pattern of charateristics via correlation coefficient. The egg weight was heaviest in duck with average weight of 61.78 g followed by brown chicken strain with average weight of 61.6 g and quail with 10.8 g. Shell weight was heaviest in brown strain with 6.58 g, followed by duck with 6.14 g and quail with 1.11 g. Yolk weight was heaviest in duck with average weight of 22.4 g, followed by brown strain chicken with average weight of 16.09 g and quail with average weight of 4.31 g. Albumen weight was heaviest in brown strain chicken with average weight of 38.9 g followed by duck with average weight of 16.38 g and quail with average weight of 4.93 g. Correlation matrix obtained showed that the pairs of weight characteristics compared were highly and linearly correlated at 1% level of significant. Analysis of variance was carried out to compare the weight characteristics of eggs and it was discovered that the weight characteristics (egg weight, shell weight, yolk weight, albumen weight) of the three poultry species were significantly different. Pair wise comparison were done using LSD and showed that: the mean of the egg weight of brown strain chicken and duck do not differ while other pair comparison differed. All pair comparison of the mean shell weight differed significantly. The pair wise comparison differed in mean yolk weight and in albumen mean weight. Pairwise comparison were carried out using Hotelling T2 and it was discovered that the mean weight of the egg characteristics differed in the birds.

  The effect of progesterone (P4) on egg production was investigated using twenty female guinea fowls raised on deep litter. The birds were given feed and water ad-libitum. They were routinely bled by wing jab between the hours of 9.00 and 10.00 am twice a month for P4 determination. Sera harvested from the samples were stored at -20°C until assayed for P4 by Radio-Immuno-Assay method (RIA). Egg production had a very high (p<0.001) and positive correlation with progesterone level. A high value of coefficient of determination (R2 value) was observed, which implies that there is a high accuracy of prediction of egg production from progesterone level.

  One hundred and eleven litter records obtained from the mating of 8 bucks to 22 does of a non-descript population were used to provide estimates of heritability and genetic correlations for pre-weaning litter traits. Least square means and standard errors for fur score, litter size at birth, litter size at weaning and weaning weight were: 30.3±0.17, 3.72±0.12, 4.8±0.12, 3.6±0.14 and 480.70±22.43 g, respectively. The least square analysis of variance revealed that most of the productive traits studied exerted significant effect on weaning weight with the exception of litter size at birth and gestation length. Heritability estimates obtained for gestation length, fur score, litter size at birth, litter size at weaning and weaning weight were 0.60±0.39, 1.46±0.56, 1.09±0.51, 1.49±0.59 and 1.07±0.51, respectively. Genetic correlations were high and positive in most cases with the exception of correlations between gestation length and weaning weight and litter size at weaning and weaning weight which were negative. Phenotypic correlations were also high and positive in most cases except for gestation length and fur score and gestation length and weaning weight which were negative.
