Commencing with parental stock of Biomphalaria glabrata snails, the majority of which were initially susceptible to infection with Schistosoma mansoni, selectively bred a line of Biomphalaria glabrata snails that displays substantially reduced susceptibility to infection with this parasite. Approximately only 2% of young adult snails of the 7th generation of selected line became infected after exposure to large numbers of miracidia, compared with infection rates of 90 % or more in control batches of un-selected parental snails.

A Gene-pool line of snail was established after allowing three Biomphalaria glabrata isolates from Brazil, Egypt and Puerto Rico. The susceptibility test of three parental isolates against four Schistosomes mansoni isolates from Brazil, Puerto Rico, Egypt and Kenya gave > 90% infection rate. The susceptibility test of newly established snail line with all four above mentioned S.mansoni isolates gave par-higher rates of infection when compared with parental snail lines.
