  The effects of various cytokinins (viz., BAP and KIN), auxins (viz., IBA, NAA and IAA) and coconut water (CW) alone or in combinations on shoot multiplication of banana cv. Anupom were investigated. The rate of multiplication varied in different treatments. Among the treatments, MS medium supplemented with 5.0 mg L-1 each of BAP + KIN and 13% coconut water produced the highest number of shoot per explant (5.8±0.154). The number of shoots responded for rooting and their survivability were found higher with IBA than NAA and IAA. MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 IBA produced the highest number of roots per shoot (7.±0.245). Plantlets grown without any auxin in the medium gave the least number of roots/shoot (2.60±0.219). The rooted plantlets were successfully transferred in the polybags and finally were well established in the field.

  The screening of thirty tomato varieties/lines to tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hub.) infestation in relation to their morphological characters was conducted in different laboratories of BAU and Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during rabi season, November 1999 to March 2000. The tomato fruit borer infestation varied significantly among the varieties/lines and also with the age of the tomato plants. Among the varieties/lines, V-29 and V-282 were found moderately resistant and susceptible, respectively. Plant height, stem diameter, total number of branches/plant, total number of leaves/plant, 2nd leaf area, total leaf chlorophyll, number of leaf hair and number of fruits/plant of V-29 line were 81.74 cm, 1.45 cm, 14, 453, 19.58 sq.cm, 1.13 mg/g, 12 and 48, respectively. Again the aforementioned characters for V-282 line were 80.74 cm, 1.18 cm, 9, 396, 21.57 sq.cm, 1.24 mg/g, 17 and 30, respectively.

  Sixteen hybrid varieties/lines viz. Sonar Bangla-1, Sonar Bangla-5, Sonar Bangla-6, Sonar Bangla-12, 262H, 283H, 284H, 287H, 291H, 305H, 306H, 311H, 312H, 317H, 321H, 352H and check variety BR28 were evaluated under natural epiphytotics against Bipolaris oryzae to find out the effect of brown spot on their yield and yield contributing characters. The hybrid line 321H showed highest disease incidence (80%) and severity (77%) followed by 352H, 305H, 291H and Sonar Bangla-5. The lowest incidence (40.50%) and severity (45%) were recorded in case of hybrid line 312H followed by 287H, 284H and 283H. Eventually, 312H performed the highest yield (6.88 t ha-1) and the lowest (3.54 t ha-1) was in case of 321H. Yield contributing character like number of effective tillers/hill, panicle length, number of grains/panicle were significantly higher in 312H while number of spotted grains and unfilled grains/panicle were significantly higher in 321H. Disease incidence and severity were correlated significantly and negatively with the yield.
