  Milk has high nutritional values and an important source of protein, minerals, vitamins and fat in human diet. It provides excellent medium for growth of both pathogenic and spoilage microorganism. This study was carried out with the aim of assessing the microbial quality of bulk milk before and after pasteurization, in two different dairy farms in Zaria. Bulk milk samples were collected on daily basis for a period of 30 days during which 30 samples each, of pasteurized and raw milk were collected from each of the farms making a total of 120 milk samples. The both samples of raw milk before pasteurization and post-pasteurization of farm A and B were analyze for total aerobic, coliform plates counts and E. coli isolation rates. Mean results of aerobic plate counts of raw milk for farm A and B before pasteurization were; 5.70 and 6.04 log10 CFU mL-1, respectively. These counts decrease to 3.76 and 4.20 log10 CFU mL-1 after pasteurization of the milk. Similarly, the E. coli isolation rate for farm A and B were; 20 and 53.3%, respectively. These also decrease to 6.7 and 13.3% after pasteurization. In addition, coliform counts also follow similarly trend. The coliform count in farm A and B were; 5.32 and 6.49 log10 CFU mL-1, respectively. The counts decrease to 3.16 and 3.74 log10 CFU mL-1 after pasteurization of the milk. Total coliform and aerobic plates counts before bulk pasteurization in both farms were significantly different (p<0.05), with post-pasteurization values when subjected to paired t-test. The coliform and aerobic plates demonstrated poor hygiene practices and inefficient pasteurization methods in both farms. High isolation rate of E. coli in post pasteurization is an indicative of fecal contamination of the bulk milk indicative of serious public health concern. In conclusion, the present study has demonstrated poor method of pasteurization couple with lack of good hygienic practices such as: proper solid waste management, potable water, cleanliness of milking area and absent of milking installation. These are all factors that contributed to production of poor quality milk in both farms with high coliform, aerobic plates and high isolation rate of Escherichia coli post pasteurization.

  The difference in Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility (EOF) and haematologic parameters among two pure (Marshal and Ross) and a Hubbard-Anak cross breeds of 9-week-old broiler chickens were evaluated in this study. There was a statistically significant (P<0.05) decrease in EOF in Marshall breed at NaCl concentrations of 0.5% when compared to other breeds. However, Ross breed had the highest EOF at this NaCl concentration. Haematologic parameters of Packed Cell Volume (PCV), haemoglobin concentration, Red Blood Cell (RBC) count, erythrocytic indices and differential leucocyte counts were not significantly different (P>0.05) among the three breeds. In conclusion, this result revealed a breed difference in EOF and that erythrocyte membranes are osmotically more stable in Marshal breed of broiler chickens.

  Chlorpyrifos (CPF) toxicity has been shown to be partly mediated through induction of oxidative stress. In the present study, experiments were conducted with the aim of evaluating the ameliorative potentials of zinc on CPF-evoked alteration in hematological parameters in Wistar rats. Twenty adult male Wistar rats were divided at random into 4 groups of 5 animals per group. Rats in group I served as the control and were given only soya oil (2 mL kg-1) while those in group II were administered zinc only (50 mg kg-1). Rats in group III were dosed with CPF only (10.6 mg kg-1, ~1/8th of LD50). Those in group IV were co-administered zinc (50 mg kg-1) and CPF (10.6 mg kg-1). The different regimens were administered orally once daily for a period of 8 weeks. At the end of the study period, blood samples collected after sacrificing the animals were analyzed for hematologic parameters such as Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Hemoglobin (Hb), Red Blood Cells (RBC), Mean Cell Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), hemoglobin indices, platelets, absolute and differential White Blood Cell (WBC) counts, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and erythrocyte malonaldehyde (MDA) concentration. The results revealed that alterations in the values of PCV, Hb, RBC, platelets, absolute and differential WBC and MDA induced by CPF were ameliorated by co-administration with zinc. In conclusion, the study has shown that attenuations of CPF-evoked alterations in hematological parameters by zinc may be partly mediated through its antioxidant properties.

  The aim of this study was to evaluate the features of induced abortion and post-abortion oestrous cycles pattern following treatment with prostaglandin F (PGF) in Sokoto Red (SR) goats. Twelve apparently healthy goats made up of 6 pregnant and 6 non-pregnant (cycling) does were used for the study. Each doe was given a single intramuscular injection of 7.5 mg PGF. All the 6 pregnant does treated with PGF aborted within 72.0±12.4 h post-treatment. Of the 6 does that aborted, 5 (83.3%) showed oestrus subsequently while 4 (66.7%) out of the 6 non-pregnant does were induced to oestrus. Time interval to induced oestrus was 129.6±36.1 and 50.0±11.5 h for the aborted and non-pregnant does, respectively. Mean duration of oestrus for the aborted and non-pregnant does was 46.9±9.6 and 38.7±4.3 h, respectively. The first and second post-abortion oestrous cycle lengths were 6.5±0.5 and 12.5±8.5 days, respectively. While the first and second post-treatment cycle lengths in the non-pregnant does was 22.5±1.2 and 21.3±0.3 days, respectively. It is concluded that a single dose of 7.5 mg PGF is sufficient to induce abortion and oestrus simultaneously in SR goats. However, the post-abortion cycles are short.

  A 1 1/2 years old apparently healthy Sokoto Red (SR) goat weighing 16 kg was diagnosed with bilateral Cystic Ovarian Follicles (COF) at postmortem carried out 24 h from the onset of standing heat. No follicles or recent copora lutea were visible on the ovaries. The weights of right and left ovaries with their cysts were 32 and 15 g, respectively. The lengths of the right (ROC) and left (LOC) ovarian cysts were 18 and 15 cm, respectively. The circumference of the bulbous ovarian end and the posterior tail-like extensions of the cysts were 12 vs. 2.5 and 6 vs. 2 cm, respectively for the ROC and LOC. The volume of follicular fluid contained in the ROC and LOC were 25 and 9.5 mL, respectively. It was concluded that the ROC had larger weight and dimensions than the LOC.
