  The present study was conducted at Livestock Research and Development Station Surezai, Peshawar during June to August 2011. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of Cotton Seed Cake (CSC) on milk yield, milk composition, feed intake, Body Condition Score (BCS) and live weight of Holstein Friesian (HF) crossbred cows. A total of nine mid-lactation crossbred cows were randomly distributed to three groups and allocated to diets containing zero (control), 20 and 35 percent CSC. All the three rations were Isocaloric and Isonitrogeniuos. Each cow was given a daily feed ration according to NRC standards. Mean daily milk yield differed (P<0.05) among all treatment groups. However, highest milk yield 5.68±0.096 kg/day was recorded for cows feed 35% CSC while the control group (0% CSC) produced the least yield 4.473±0.184 kg/day. Cows on 35% CSC produced higher milk fat 4.46±0.22 percent and have significant (P<0.05) effect on milk fat content while the control group produced the least 3.35±0.22 percent fat. CSC had no significant (P>0.05) effect on protein content in milk as cows on 35% CSC diet produced the least 2.7±0.09 percent protein, while the control group produce the highest 3.00±0.09 percent. The concentration of Lactose and total milk solid not fat (SNF) content was higher (P>0.05) for control group than the cows fed on other diet. There was significant (P<0.05) difference in daily feed intake as the cows on 35% CSC diet had the highest daily feed intake of 32.478±0.31kg/day while the control group had the least intake 29.138±0.31kg/day. Experimental rations had no significant (P>0.05) effect on mean changes in BCS. The Live weight was not effected significantly (P>0.05) by rations, However highest mean change in weight gain of 7.66±4.95kg/45day was recorded for cows fed ration having 35% CSC while least 5.00 ±7.90 kg/45day was recorded for cows fed zero% CSC in the ration. Economically ration having 35% CSC had the lowest cost of milk production (Rs: 17.14/kg) as compared to ration having 20% (Rs.19.68/kg) and Zero% CSC (Rs.21.6/kg). These results concluded that milk yield; milk fat and feed intake was increased with supplementation of high level of cotton seed cake in the dairy cattle ration. Higher proportion of CSC (35%) has shown the best efficiency of production as compare to other rations.

  A study was conducted to examine the effect of Aga Khan Rural Support Program on human resource development particularly on livestock management in district Chitral. Study was conducted in three-community organizations in village Charun, Tehsil Mastu, Chitral. A total 120 respondents were randomly selected for interview, 98 beneficiaries and 22 non-beneficiaries. Almost 100% respondents were landowners, cultivating a land of about two kanal and were satisfied with training component of AKRSP, about 47% were literate. The enrolled respondents were 50.2% of the age 33-45 years and 30.1% of the age 46-58 years. Farming was main occupation of 64% beneficiaries, 29% adopted as secondary occupation and 8% having not even the secondary occupation. The rest were engaged in other services like business, labor etc., while majority having annual income ranging from RS. 34600 to 45600. About 45% respondents applied training information and found it useful. Collectively observed 47% increase in livestock size and 24%-improved breed was used as AKRSP had provided a jersey bull for crossing with local breed. The after effects of the study resulted in improved managemental practices which caused remarkable development like enhanced production and increased income of the beneficiaries i.e. up to 62%, changes in farming practice up to 19% and up gradation in occupation of 65% beneficiaries. Besides improvement in the size of livestock holding and milk production, medication and vaccination reduced animal mortality and disease out breaks. The study showed that diseases can be controlled and income could be improved if inputs and credit are provided in the areas of concern.

  A study was conducted at Livestock Research and Development Station, Animal Analytical Laboratory Dir Lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Pakistan to document the phenotypic and Morphometric characteristic of Achai cattle. Total 18 pure Achai Cattle were selected in the study. Phenotypic characteristic were recorded visually. Majority (88.50%) of the study Achai color have reddish brown coat color with white face but those animals were also included in the study that have radish brown color with or without white spotted face, gray muzzle, radish and white eye lashes. Physical characteristic (color of coat, muzzle, face, eye lash, horns, hump, udder hooves and tail switch) were recorded visually while morpho-metric measurements (heart girth, body length, height at withers, horn length, ear length, neck length, hoof circumference and tail length) were recorded by using measuring tape and vernier caliper. Mean body, face, ear, horn, rump and tail length was 112±4.78, 42±0.502, 19±0.469, 17±0.874, 33±0.481 and 75±1.332 centimeter, respectively. Mean width of head and shoulder was 12±2.937 and 89±0.2711, respectively. Mean circumference of neck and abdominal was 68±1.03 and 168±2.159. Mean chest girth was 142±0.978 and rump height was observed 103±4.16 accordingly. The average body weight of adult Achai cow recorded was 203.81±6.17 kg. The average birth and weaning weight was recorded 13.90±0.80 and 48.0±5.00 kg, respectively. It was concluded that Achai is a small size breed of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan having short stature, radish brown color and fully adapted to the hilly areas of the province.
