  Heavy metals are potentially toxic to human life and the environment. Hence, determining the chemical form of a metal in soils is important to evaluate its mobility and bio availability. Sequential extraction was used to fractionate four heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb) from six contaminated soils into six operationally defined groups: water-soluble, exchangeable, carbonate, Fe-Mn oxide, organic and residual. Analysis of the extracts was carried out by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Cu was predominantly associated with Fe-Mn oxide and residual, the carbonate fraction of Cd represents more than 70% of the total Cd found in the soils, and this percentage is much greater than that of other elements examined. A major portion (>60%) of Zn was associated with the Fe-Mn oxide and carbonate fractions, whereas Pb was largely associated with organic matter and Fe-Mn oxide fractions with significant amounts in the carbonate and residual fractions. The results were interpreted in terms of the environmental mobility and bioavailability of the metals.

  Most of the water requirement for Lagos is met from surface and ground water supplies. Lagos an industrial and highly populated city located in the Southwest Nigeria has urban migration problems and resource limitations. However, as found in many cities, a certain proportion of the population is forced to rely on the well water as sources of drinking water, a poor drinking water quality that may have health consequences. A study was therefore carried out to gain an idea of the inorganic quality of the water in the wells penetrating the shallow (< 20 m thick) alluvial aquifer in the city. Results from this study revealed that some of the ground water quality constituents exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking water irrespective of the sources of pollution: the total dissolved solids limit in 50%, the conductivity limit in 27.8%, the lead limit in 38.9%, the pH limit in 44.4% and the sodium and calcium limits in 11.1% of the samples. Thus, ground water from some of these wells requires further purification to ensure its fitness for human consumption.

  Five leafy vegetable species (Talinum triangulare, Celosia argentea, Amaranthus viridis, Cucurbita maxima and Corchorus olitorius) sold in Lagos markets were investigated for Cu, Pb and Zn content by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Both unwashed and washed leaves showed the highest amounts of heavy metals in the urban area. Unwashed leaves showed greater difference between urban and remote areas and among the urban sites than washed leaves for heavy metal concentrations. Water-washing resulted in a significant (p<0.001) decrease in vegetable concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb. However, the levels of Cu and Zn did not indicate excessive contamination that could be considered a serious health hazard to the consumers.
