  An investigation on the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of Nigella sativa seeds was carried out. The methanolic extract from the dried sample of Nigella sativa seeds was prepared and examined for its phytochemical composition. The sample exhibited noticeable scavenging effects in DPPH free radical scavenging assay. It has also been evaluated the effect of methanolic extract of Nigella sativa seed on HepG2, MCF-7 and VERO cells proliferation using the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. After 72 h incubation, HepG2 and MCF-7 cell proliferation was inhibited upto 50% by the methanolic extract. The phytochemical constituent appears to be responsible at least in part, for the observed antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract. The greater reducing activity of the extract reflected the generally greater phenolic content of the Nigella sativa. The DNA fragmenting pattern of the Nigella sativa seed extract was identified using DNA fragmentation assay. The number of DNA fragments were increased with the concentration of the seed extract. The results suggest that the Nigella sativa seeds could be a potential source of natural antioxidant.

  The leaves of Justicia gendarussa are used in the folk medicine for the treatment of various ailments like rheumatic pain, jaundice, cephalgia, hemiplegia and eczema, etc. The leaves of the plant consists of important phytoconstituents including O-di-substituted aromatic amines, 2-aminobenzyl alcohol, O methyl ethers, friedelin, lupeol and β-sistosterol. In the present investigation, different solvent extracts of J. gendarussa leaves were screened and compared for membrane stability and antibacterial activities. Even at lower concentrations, methanolic extract of J. gendarussa shown good antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity. At higher concentrations, methanolic extracts gave relatively more projecting antibacterial activity when compared with gentamycin. The anti-inflammatory effects of the crude drug were compared with Diclofenac as positive control. The methanolic extracts of J. gendarussa leaves possessed a broad spectrum antibacterial activity against both gram-negative and gram positive organisms like Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 96), Staphylococcus mutans (MTCC 497), Bacillus subtilis (MTCC 441), Micrococcus luteus (MTCC 1538), gram negative organisms; Proteus vulgaris (MTCC 426), Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC 109), Escherichia coli (MTCC 443) and Shigella flexneri (MTCC 1457) with a zone of inhibition from 7-12 mm. The extract also showed good membrane stability to be considered to have significant anti-inflammatory action.

  Plant antioxidants have gained significant interest in recent years for their role in preventing the auto corrosion of fats and oils. The present study was aimed to screen the phytochemical constituents such as alkaloids, anthraquinons, cumarins, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, saponins, steroids and terpenoids from the ethyl acetate leaf extract of Justicia gendarussa and also to assess the antioxidant potential of same extract. Result of present investigation clearly revealed that total phenolic content was 34.10±0.79 mg/100 mg GAE and total flavonoid was found to be 15.01±0.30 mg/100 mg QE. In vitro antioxidant activity of J. gendarussa leaf by DPPH assay showed 74.20±0.44%, FRAP assay showed 72.15±0.44% and nitric acid scavenging assay revealed 65.99±1.93%, remarkably high phenolic content and antioxidant activities were found in the ethyl acetate extract. Further studies, to isolate and identification of bioactive compounds in food and pharmaceutical industries.
