  Six AGR and ten grasscutter were used in this study. The large size of the olfactory bulb of the AGR makes them better sniffers of landmines and tuberculosis patient than the grasscutter if trained. The large size of the cerebrum of both animals makes them good animals for studies on their neurobiology.

  Morphometric studies were carried out using standard procedures on the kidney of the African Giant Rat (AGR). The average kidney weight was 2.085±0.044 g. The right kidney was significantly (p< 0.05) heavier than the left. The male kidneys were larger than those of the female and the values obtained were 2.119±0.062 g and 2.053±0.009 g, respectively. The average liveweight of the AGR was 8.63.520±3.74 g. The relative thickness of the medulla was 4.30. The results of the present study provide baseline morphometric data on the kidney of the AGR which had been lacking. The value of the relative thickness of the medulla (4.3), similar to those of the dog (4.2) and the cat (4.8), suggests that the AGR does not have special anatomical adaptation in the urinary system for water economy. The capability to thrive well in arid environment probably lies somewhere else.

  We observed and measured the macroscopic anatomical parameters of the gastrointestinal tract of 8 grasscutter. The stomach was relatively small, about 3% when compared to the body size. It presented 3 portions: Cardiac, fundic and pylorus, which are similar to the monogastric animals documented in the literature. It can therefore, be classified as a simple stomach (with one chamber), in form of a curved sac and similar to an inverted letter J. The Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) mean weight and length were 142.311.94 g and 2.89.521.30 cm, respectively. This accounted for 14% of the total body weight in this animal. The cecum was slightly longer than the stomach but was observed to be the largest organ in the abdominal cavity, similar to that of the horse. It had 3 portions: Base, body and apex. Longitudinal bands of smooth muscles called tenias with intervening sacculations or haustra were observed in both cecum and colon. The colon mean length was 12112.9 cm, while, the jejunum was 109.59.03 cm, given a differences of 12 cm in favor of the colon. This accounted for 42 and 38% of the colon and jejunal total length of the GIT, respectively. The colon was the longest segment of the GIT and not the jejunum.

  Morphometric studies were carried out on the brain of 10 African grasscutter. The mean brain weight was 10.50.31 g. The mean brain length (from the olfactory bulb to the medulla oblongata at the level of occipital condyles) was 5.950.12 cm. The mean brain height was 1.590.10 cm (measured from level of the hypothalamus to the top of the cerebrum). The mean cerebellar weight and length were 1.260.05 and 3.480.45 cm, respectively. The ratio of the brain to body weight was 0.01. This is bigger than 0.006 Red Sokoto sheep, but smaller than 0.02 of man. Increase in the body weight did not directly affect the brain weight.

  Mitracarpus scaber is a local herb traditionally used for the treatment of eczema and other skin disorders. Methanolic extracts made from leaves, stem, fluorescence and roots were prepared and dried. Graded concentrations of the 4 separate plant parts were prepared in nutrient broth contained in universal bottles at 10, 7, 5, 3 and 2 g mL 1. Standard chloramphenicol (Norbrook Laboratories Ltd., London) was similarly prepared and used as known antibiotic. An isolate of Dermatophilus congolensis was obtained and inoculated in each of the graded broth media and incubated at 37C, microaerophilically, for 24 h. Two replications were made with blank controls and growth of Dermatophilus congolensis was observed and recorded. The results obtained showed that leaves, fluorescence and root extracts were inhibitory at concentration of 3 g mL 1 while, stem extract was at 5 g mL 1. Chloramphenicol was inhibitory at 2 g mL 1. It is recommended that research be carried out on this plant to further elucidate its antimicrobial potentials.
