Objective  To investigate the clinical relevance of the TLR4 11367 polymorphism in patients with major trauma.

Design  Genetic functional and association study.

Setting  Daping Hospital and Chongqing Emergency Medical Center, Chongqing, China.

Patients  A total of 132 patients with major trauma were prospectively recruited.

Main Outcome Measures  The TLR4 11367 polymorphism was genotyped using single-tube, bidirectional, allele-specific amplification method. Whole peripheral blood samples obtained within 24 hours after admission were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide and then tested for production of tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 6. Sepsis morbidity rate and multiple organ dysfunction scores were assessed.

Results  The 11367 polymorphism was shown to be strongly associated with less capacity of peripheral leukocytes to produce tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 6 in response to ex vivo lipopolysaccharide stimulation in patients with trauma at admission. Results from association study indicated that patients with trauma who carry the 11367C allele were less likely to have sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction.

Conclusions  Combined with our previous in vitro functional study, the results suggest that the TLR4 11367 polymorphism might be a good predictor of who is more likely to develop complications such as sepsis or multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, depending on genotype.

The location awareness is a crucial foundation for perceptions of the surroundings in the smart environment. Radio frequency identification (RFID), as one of the most promising technologies, plays a more important role in the indoor location awareness. This paper surveys current RFID-based locating research and discusses the problem that is brought by the tag's diversity derived from different manufacturer types and different used-time of built-in battery. We present the algorithm named RFDiffFreeLoc to improve the location precision by eliminating the dissimilarity among tags. In the stimulation experiments, we analyze the impact of noise on performance and contrast our algorithm with the existing LANDMARC algorithm. The simulation performances show that our algorithm is feasible via two metrics: the mean error and cumulative error distribution. The results indicate that RFDiffFreeLoc significantly increases the locating accuracy: when the space between the reference tags is 1 m, the mean error drops 0.076–0.344 m according to various noise conditions. Furthermore, a prototype system named RFHome is deployed for validating the algorithm in the actual home environment. The practical experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm is more effective than previous LANDMARC algorithm.

Mutations in FAM20C were recently identified as the cause of lethal osteosclerotic bone dysplasia, which highlighted the important role of this molecule in biomineralization. No systematic studies have been performed to evaluate the expression pattern of this relatively new molecule in the developmental processes of bone and tooth. In the present study, we analyzed in detail the expression profile of FAM20C during osteogenesis and odontogenesis using ISH and IHC approaches. The specimens analyzed were mouse tissues spanning embryonic day 13.5 (E13.5) to postnatal 8 weeks. The earliest presence of FAM20C was observed at E14.5. During osteogenesis, FAM20C mRNA was detected in the chondrocytes and osteoblasts of the long bone, whereas its protein was observed in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of bone and in the cytoplasm of the chondrocytes, osteoblasts, and osteocytes. During odontogenesis, FAM20C mRNA was detected in the ameloblasts, odontoblasts, cementoblasts, and periodontal ligament fibroblasts, whereas its protein was observed in the matrices of dentin, enamel, and alveolar bone and in the cytoplasm of the aforementioned cells. The temporospatial expression profile revealed in this study indicates that FAM20C is an ECM protein that may play an important role in controlling the mineralization of bone and tooth. The purpose of this study was to develop representative gender- and age-specific percentile reference data for serum lipids for Chinese adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age. Blood samples were obtained from 2998 boys and 3225 girls in nine provinces from the mainland of China, including rural and urban areas. The data for serum lipid levels, including TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C, were calculated and measured between March and June 2008. Gender- and age-specific percentiles of serum lipid levels were calculated. Gender- and age-specific percentile-based reference data for serum lipids is presented for Chinese adolescents for the first time. The 95th percentile for the TC, TG and LDL-C levels was 5.07, 1.90 and 3.32 mmol/l, and the 5th percentile for the HDL-C level was 0.92 mmol/l among all the students. These reference values can be used to plan and implement preventive policies, and to study temporal trends.

We examine the behavior of call options surrounding the underlying stock's ex-dividend date. The evidence is inconsistent with the predictions of a rational exercise policy; a significant fraction of the open interest remains unexercised, resulting in a windfall gain to option writers. This triggers a sophisticated trading scheme that enables short-term traders to receive a significant fraction of the gains. The trading scheme inflates reported volume and distorts its traditional relations to liquidity. The dramatic increases in the volume of trade on the last cum-dividend day are facilitated by limitations on transaction costs passed by the various option exchanges.
