  In this study, the method of estimating the spatial uniformity of hydrological characteristics and the subsequent zoning of the studied territory by means of GIS applications are described. A new algorithm is proposed for estimating the uniformity of spatially distributed data depending on the differentiation of spatial-correlation functions of the studied characteristics. Mathematical calculation algorithm was implemented using object-oriented C++ programming language. Prospects of researches in the creation of information model of the territory, reflecting the spatial structure, the status and relationships between its separate elements with the purpose of optimization of nature management and making decisions about the management of natural objects are outlined.

  The study analyses current concepts of ecological zoning. On a specific example, the need of using a systematic approach in this issue is discussed that means that all research operations performed in the process of zoning shall be interconnected and interdependent and their selection shall be based on a modular concept. A method is presented for statistical evaluation of the uniformity of environmental data in the selected region. Software application for windows platform was developed, making this method friendly for any specialist who works in the field of monitoring and protecting the environment.

  The objective of this research is the study of the problem of the lack of high-quality geospatial data needed for designing customized GIS projects. It is suggested to solve the problem by using free network resources of vector and raster data with diverse spatial resolution and area coverage which are in open access. The study describes the largest free sources of geodata, the use of which allows to solve the problem of the lack of spatial information as regard to those regions where measurement of desired characteristics has not been performed or owing to some reasons is in accessible. The study presents specific examples of compatibility of heterogeneous spatial characteristics, received from various sources in the unified coordinate space of the environmental GIS project. The algorithm for research projects creation with the help of various methods of data interpolation for the spatio-temporal analysis of environmental characteristics is presented. The conclusion is drawn that the use of free data in the training course designed for ecology students provides wide opportunities for further inter disciplinary researches.

  This study describes methods of preliminary assessment of the state of meteorological and hydrological exploration of river catchments to develop common approaches to modeling and forecasting of hydrological processes. A brief overview is given of the organization of monitoring systems in different countries. The quantitative assessment is performed of the ground observation coverage over the largest river basins within the European territory of Russia with cartographic visualization in GIS. Recommendations are given on the use of specific hydro-geological models for forecasting for catchments assigned to a particular group according to the state of exploration of runoff formation process.

  The aim of our study was to develop specific methods that make possible to identify and visualize focuses of ecosystem pollution for the determinationof the permissible anthropogenic impact boundaries and prediction of their development. The two-level spatial zoning method is considered through the example of an environmentally unfavorable region of the Russian Federation. The set of analytic methods is proposed, which was applied to determine the preliminary boundaries of areas using the clustering procedure, while the algorithms of correlation and regression analyzes allow to assess the uniformityof specific environmental characteristics in selected areas.
