  This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of pumice on some physical and mechanical properties of clay bricks fired under varying firing temperatures. Brick samples comprising varying amounts of pumice were prepared, mixing the clay material pumice in gradually increasing ratios. Increasing rate of pumice gradually decreased bending strength, compressing strength, density, firing shrinkage and heat conductivity; and gradually increased the water adsorption of the brick produces under reach of 800, 900 and 1000°C. It was concluded that pumice can be safely used to improve mechanical and physical properties of the final material, provided that the ration of pumice to clay should not be exceed unity.

  The objectives of this study were to utilize sunflower stalks and grinded pumice as components of composite materials and to evaluate mechanical and physical properties of composite materials composed of sunflower stalk and sunflower stalk plus grinded pumice. The experiment was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, varying rates of sunflower stalks were mixed with gypsum and in the second stage, varying rates of sunflower stalk and pumice were mixed with gypsum. Increasing the ratio of sunflower stalk added in gypsum gradually decreased the unit weight and increased thermal insulation capacity that could be described by a linear regression equation (R2 = 0.89 and R2 = 0.81). However, mechanical and bending resistances decreased and water absorption capacity increased that could be described by a second degree polynomial regression equation in the former case and linear regression equation in the later case (R2 = 0.94, R2 = 0.85 and R2 = 0.84). When used together with pumice, increasing rates of sunflower stalk affected thermal and physical properties of the final product differently compared to when used alone. Low unit weight and good heat insulation feature favored the use of final products.

  The aims of this study were to determine the physical and mechanical features of gypsum composite material added waste PET bottles and investigate possible use of this material in agricultural constructions. Samples were prepared by mixing gypsum with waste PET bottles 0-2, -4 and 0-4 mm diameter. Density, water absorption, heat conduction, bending and compressive strengths of composite materials were determined. The results indicated that increasing the proportion of waste PET bottles added in gypsum influences density and heat insulation feature positively, but it decreases bending and mechanical resistance. It is possible to build more economical and better insulated constructions by using this composite material for coating walls and ceilings and flooring roofs.

  Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) and Beet soilborne virus (BSBV) are the important soilborne virus diseases in the production areas of sugar beet. A survey was carried out to detect these viruses in soil samples using bait plant test and double antibody sandwich-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) and triple antibody sandwich-ELISA (TAS-ELISA) in sugar beet production areas in Tokat, Turkey in 2001. Of the 26 soil samples taken from 8 districts in Tokat province, it was found that 23 samples (85.5%) were infected with BNYVV and 24 samples (92.3%) with BSBV. In 2002, total 49 root samples were tested for the presence of these viruses by ELISA. The incidence of BNYVV (67%) was greater than that of BSBV (8%). Furthermore, in this study it was determined the relationships between physical and chemical properties of soils and the appearance of BNYVV and BSBV. But, it could not determine any connection between infectious potential of viruses and soil properties.
