  Tomato and bell pepper seeds were treated with salicylic acid (50 mM), neem oil (5%) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (slurry). The seedlings were sprayed with salicylic acid (50 mM) and neem oil (5%). The concentration of Tomato mosaic tobamovirus (ToMV) and Tobacco mosaic tobamovirus (TMV) was assessed based on the number of local lesions on Nicotiana glutinosa. The results showed that the seed/seedling treatment with inducers reduced the number of local lesions when compared to untreated ones. Salicylic acid was an effective inducer.

  The present study was taken up to evaluate the effect of leaf extracts and acetone-precipitated protein of medicinal plants on seed-borne Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) and Tomato Mosaic Virus (ToMV) infection. The antiviral activity was tested on indicator plant Nicotiana glutinosa. Acetone precipitated proteins and solvent extracts of six medicinal plants were tested for their effect on tobamovirus infection. The aqueous leaf extracts of Guava, Phyllanthus and Thuja were effective in reducing the infection by ToMV. The acetone-precipitated fractions of Tridax, Thuja, Guava and Tulsi were effective in reducing the infection by TMV. The solvent extract of Guava was effective in reducing the ToMV infection. Guava extract was subjected to TLC and the fractions were tested for their antiviral activity. Fraction with RF value of 0.014 proved to be effective in reducing the ToMV infection. The solvent extract of Thuja was effective in reducing TMV infection. TLC fraction of Thuja extract with the RF value of 0.12 reduced the TMV infection. Along with this, effect of aqueous leaf extracts on seed quality parameters of tomato and bell pepper was studied.

  In order to trigger defense mechanisms in plants, abiotic or biotic factors can be used as inducers/elicitors. In the present study, Dravya (a sea weed extract) was evaluated for its compatibility with common synthetic fungicides like Bavistin and Dithane M-45. Dravya was found to be highly compatible with Dithane M-45, in which the incidence of Bipolaris oryzae and Alternaria padwickii was reduced to a greater extent in the paddy seed sample of Cv. IR-64, a popular variety for popped rice in South India. In parallel, seed germination and seedling vigour were also enhanced over control. Treated seedlings also indicated the enhanced peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activities upon challenge inoculation with Bipolaris oryzae. Challenged seedlings showed higher activity of enzymes on second and fourth day after inoculation. The suppression in disease incidence of the seedlings was also noticed in the growing plants indicated the promising effects of Dravya with Dithane M-45 under green house conditions.

  In the present study, chemicals and antagonists were used for their efficacy in the management of seed-borne fungal pathogens of watermelon. The fungal species belonging to different genera were isolated from the seeds of watermelon and were used to assess their vulnerability to an array of chemicals and bio-agents. Among the fungal pathogens, Fusarium species was effectively suppressed due to Bavistin. Topsin also gave the promising results against all the fungal pathogens. Whereas, Dithane M-45 effectively controlled Didymella bryoniae. Seed treatment with antagonists like Trichoderma harzianum and T. viride improved the seed germination, seedling vigour and reduced the incidence of seed-borne fungal pathogens compared to control. Bavistin and Topsin among chemicals, T. harzianum among bio-agents increased the seed germination and vigour index significantly. Trichoderma harzianum showed its efficacy against all Fusarium species and even stood more effective than Captan and Blitox. However, Pseudomonas fluorescens also showed promising effect against Didymella bryoniae over fungicides.
