  Concentrations of cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel, copper, manganese and zinc in six brands of fruit drinks was investigated. The concentration of the heavy metals showed appreciable (p<0.05) variability within a brand except for Pb and Zn in orange brand. However, apparent and significant variability exist when brands are compared. The mean levels of the studied metals varies between 2.29-18.29 ppm for Fe, 1.41-7.19 ppm for Cu, 0.002-0.89 ppm for Cr, 0.06-1.93 ppm for Pb, 0.21-1.00 ppm for Ni, 0.006-11.29 ppm for Mn, 0.69-1.25 ppm for Zn and 0.002-0.49 ppm for Cd, the levels of these metals exceeded statutory safe limits except for Mn, Zn and Fe.

  This communication present the results of the determination of total petroleum hydrocarbon content of soil profiles of automobile mechanic waste dumps. The levels of petroleum hydrocarbon in all sites ranged from 486-4438.7, 116.3-433.4 and 54.5-244.2 mg kg-1 for 0-15, 15-30 and 30-60 cm depths, respectively. The concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbon in automobile waste dump sites are relatively high and represent elevated concentrations above background levels found in unpolluted soils. The hydrocarbon concentrations show no relationship with the soil physicochemical characteristics and ages of the dumpsites. Automobile mechanic waste dumps represent a potential sources of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in soils, sediments, surface water and groundwater in areas remote from oil exploration and production sites.

  Heavy metals in surface soils under waste dumps in Onitsha metropolis was investigated from Onitsha metropolis. Seven metals, namely arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, manganese, lead and lithium were considered. Analytical determinations were performed by atomic absorption spectrometry after sample digestion with acid mixture. Elevated concentrations of the aforementioned metals were obtained in this study. All metals were detected except for the background, soil sample from Inland town where chromium and lead were below detection limit. There were variations in the concentrations of metals in soils from various locations. Metal concentrations in soils obtained from Omagba phase II, Woliwo layout, Fegge road, Head bridge, Odoakbu layout, Awada layout and Isiafor layout were higher than those from Ozala layout and Inland town (Background soil samples). The highest concentrations of the contaminant metals found in soil located near the head bridge of River Niger. The sources of these metals were attributed to the industrial and anthropogenic wastes in various sample locations.

  This study report the results of determination of concentrations of lead, cadmium, chromium, barium, arsenic and mercury in sawdust particles collected in the vicinity of wood sawmill in Sapele and its environs. The mean levels of the elements observed ranged from 40-250 mg kgG1 for Pb; 0.50 mg kgG1 for Cd; 1.46-160.50 mg kgG1 for Cr; 1.50-94.0 mg kgG1 for Ba; 32.0-84.0 mg kgG1 for As and 0.50-40 mg kgG1 for Hg. The levels of these trace elements observed in the sawdust particles exceeded permissible occupational exposure limits. Sawdust particles constitute serious health risk to human and the environment in general.
