  Chickpea pod borer, H. armigera infestation forecasting models revealed that 4th March ± 6 days, 13th April ± 4 days and 7th June ± 16 days were calculated to be the predicted dates for start, peak and end of trap catch populations respectively according to Calendar date method. Similarly, by Degree-day accumulation method, 181.2 ± 39.7, 480 ± 85.5, and 1379.6 ± 319.3 degree-days were calculated as to be the predicted degree-days for start, peak and end of trap catch populations respectively. In April 1999, insect peak population was seen on 14th April (fallen in agreement within the range of the calendar date model) and accordingly the plant protection measures were adopted.

  The retardation in the development of Helicoverpa armigera by spore-d-endotoxin complex of different strains of Bacillus thuringiensis at 7 days exposure was evaluated through long term bioassays. Comparative studies in the development of test insect at 7 days exposure to the toxins of HD-I-S-1980 (16000 IU/mg) vs HD-244 (24,000 IU/mg) indicated non-significant differences in survivors at different developmental stages. However, both the toxins caused delayed effect on larval period. The changes in larval period were directly proportional to the log of concentration of the spore-crystal complex in the diet. The influence of toxin concentration had inverse correlation with the rate of pupation and adult emergence.

  The inter-specific compatibility between commercial preparation Costar® WP having Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki Berliner (Btk) and Larvin® (Thiodocarb) were evaluated against chickpea pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera Huebner. The combination of low concentrations of Larvin® had reduced lethal concentration (that is, increased toxicity at LC50 and LC90) of Bacillus thuringiensis (Costar® WP) when first instar larvae of chickpea pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera Huebner were fed on artificial diet treated with bacteria supplemented with low dosages of chemical insecticide. The combination treatment (Costar® WP+Larvin® LC10) increased potency of Costar® WP from 77,600 to 1,04,000 IU mg-1. Synergistic interaction indicate that Larvin® (Thiodocarb) can be used with B. thuringiensis for management of H. armigera in the field. Laboratory test of B. thuringiensis further in low dosages supplemented with same and other group of chemical insecticides against H. armigera are suggested.
