  The analyses of genetic correlation and path coefficient were made using 56 F2 families and their 8 parents of G. hirsutum L. It was revealed that number of bolls and lint percentage had positive and significant relationship with seed cotton yield, boll weight, lint index, staple length and fibre fineness. Boll weight showed strong association with lint percentage, fibre fineness and plant yield. Staple length and fibre fineness exhibited positive correlation with plant yield. Oil and protein contents were positively related with almost all the characters studied in the present investigations. Path analysis revealed that number of bolls and boll weight made the greatest contribution towards seed cotton yield. In addition boll weight, lint percentage, lint index, staple length, fibre fineness and protein content also affected plant productivity through number of bolls. However oil content contributed via boll weight.

  The correlation coefficient analysis showed that all the characters observed in this experiment have positive correlation with yield of seed cotton per plant. As regards the significance of correlation, these differ in respect as number of bolls per plant and average boll weight are highly significant while staple length has significant correlation and seed inde, lint index and ginning outturn are non significant. The value of coefficients of determination revealed that larger proportion of probability in yield was accounted for number of bolls per plant.

  Four genotypes of Gossypium hirsutum L; two drought tolerant (NIAB-78, CIM-482) and two susceptible (CIM-446 and FH-1000) were selected to make cross combinations. The parents, F1, F2 and backcross generations of two crosses were studied under drought and normal conditions in the field to find gene action involved in the inheritance of the traits; number of bolls per plant, boll weight, seed cotton yield and ginning out turn. There were significant differences among six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2) of two crosses for all the plant traits both under normal and drought conditions. Generation means analysis revealed additive, dominance and epistatic genetic effects operating in the phenotypic manifestation of the plant characters under both the conditions.
