  Different methods of sterilizing sprouting media for the control of rot in minisetts of Dioscorea rotundata var Pona and Dente were evaluated. Sawdust and topsoil sprouting media were sterilized by roasting, solarization and fumigation in a completely randomized block design replicated thrice in the laboratory. Significantly higher percentage rot was recorded for minisetts planted in unsterilized sprouting media than those in sterilized media. Incidence of minisett rot was, however, higher in unsterilized topsoil than in unsterilized sawdust. Roasting was most effective in sterilizing the sprouting media, followed by fumigation and the least was solarization. There was no significant difference between the effects of sterilized sawdust and topsoil on rotting and sprouting of yam minisetts. Pona minisetts planted in sterilized medium produced higher percentage sprouting and lower percentage rotting as compared with that of Dente minisetts.

  Tomato production in the Bontanga irrigation area has reduced drastically. Thus, a study was conducted to identify the problems. Structured and unstructured questionnaires were administered to 50 farmers randomly selected from about 90 farmers in the study area for two years. The results showed that 60% of the farmers were illiterates and 20% had formal education. Over 70% of the farmers obtained their seed from markets and unregistered agro-stores and the remaining use their reserved seeds. Most of the farmers practice continuous sole cropping and very few crop rotations. The farmers also indicated lack of credit facilities as the major bane of tomato production. About 90% of the farmers complained of salinity, water logging, soil erosion and degradation, sedimentation, build up of pests and diseases as a result of irrigation related problems. Formation of farmers cooperatives or group will help solve or minimize the constraints of dwindling tomato production in this area.

  The present study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of different disinfectants and protectants in improving sprouting and controlling rotting of yam minisetts. Results revealed that disinfection of both the sprouting medium and yam minisetts increase significantly the percentage sprouting of the Pona minisetts. Benlate was more effective in reducing the incidence of minisett rot and enhanced sprouting of the minisetts in roasted sawdust than the other protectants or disinfectants. Benlate-treated Pona minisetts gave high percentage sprouting and low percentage rotting in the roasted sawdust compare to that of Dente minisetts. Quicklime and neem wood ash were also effective in reducing incidence of minisett rot and increased sprouting of yam minisetts significantly compared with sodium hypochlorite, aqueous neem leaf extract and untreated minisetts (control).

  Five commercial sorghum cultivars, three isogenic lines and two internationally known head bug resistant cultivars as checked, were evaluated for two seasons to determine their performance under head bug (Eurystylus oldi Poppuis) infestation using four evaluation methods to classify the cultivars. The experiment was split-plot with three replications, infestation (control and artificial) and cultivars constituted main and sub-plot treatment respectively. Seasons of evaluation was not significant, infestation, cultivars and their interaction was highly significant ( p<=0.01) for grain damage rating, germination percentage panicle length and weight, 1000 grain weight and grain yield, therefore genetic variation in resistance to head bug was present. HRBC 017 had the least percent reduction (2%) for 1000 grain weight and Samsorg 40 had the higher percent reduction (55%) for grain yield. HRBC 017 was the least susceptible while Samsorg 40 was the most susceptible. Yield reduction index gave similar trend. Insect resistant index identified HRBC 017 as the most resistant, while samsorg 3 the least resistant. The four evaluation methods classified the genotypes: HRBC 017, HRBC 013 and HRBC 029 as resistant, Samsorg 17 and samsorg 18 as tolerant, while Samsorg 3, Samsorg17 and Samsorg 40 as susceptible.
