  The goal of this study was to examine the effect of maize plumule extracts on mammary gland tissue and serum hormone levels in SD rats suffering from mammary gland hyperplasia and to investigate the mechanism by which maize plumule extracts inhibit mammary gland hyperplasia. About 56 rats were subcutaneously injected with progesterone combined with estradiol benzoate for the induction of mammary gland hyperplasia and were then randomly divided into 7 groups. Maize plumule extracts were subsequently given to the rats at doses of 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg kg-1 daily for 20 days. Following treatment, hormone levels in the blood were measured and the morphology of the rat mammary glands was observed by microscopy. Results showed that high doses of maize plumule extracts significantly improved the morphology of lesional tissue and significantly reduced the levels of Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), serum Estradiol (E2) and Testosterone (T) in the serum and increased the levels of Prolactin (PRL) and serum Luteinizing Hormone (LH). However, the treatment did not have a substantial effect on serum Progesterone (P) levels. It can be concluded that maize plumule extracts containing rich adenine derivatives administered at doses of 2.5-40 mg/kg/day could effectively prevent and treat rat mammary gland hyperplasia.

  The chicken (Gallus gallus) is an important model organism in genetics, developmental biology, immunology and evolutionary research. Moreover, besides being an important model organism the chicken is also a very important agricultural species and an important source of food (eggs and meat). The availability of the draft chicken genome sequence provided many possibilities to in detail study a variety of genomic changes during evolution using a comparison between chicken and mammals. For example, compared to mammals, the use of a Z/W sex determination system is a special aspect of the avian genome where the female is the heterogametic sex (ZW) and the male is the homogametic (ZZ) sex. A comparison of the genomic sequences of platypus, chicken and human showed that sex chromosomes evolved separately in birds and mammals.

  As a cytokinin growth factor kinetin (N6-furfuryladenine) with several biological effects observed for human cells and fruit flies. It was named kinetin because of its ability to induce cell division. The mechanism of kinetin synthesis in DNA is thought to be via the production of furfural, an oxidative damage product of DNA deoxyribose and it is quenched by the adenine base converting it into N6-furfuryladenine. Since 1994, kinetin has been thoroughly tested for its powerful antiaging effects in human skin cells and other systems. At present, kinetin is one of the most widely used components in numerous skin care cosmetics and cosmeceuticals. Kinetin which was isolated 50 years ago for the first time as a plant hormone as well as other cytokinins isopentenyladenine, zeatin and benzylaminopurine induce callus (clusters of dedifferentiated plant cells) to redifferentiate into adventitious buds. Because of some similarities in the biological phenotypes of cancer and callus cells, cytokinins and especially kinetin, affect the differentiation of human cells through a common signal transduction system. Therefore, cytokinins found their way to use in molecular medicine.

  Calpastatin (CAST) is a specific inhibitor of the ubiquitous calcium-dependent proteases-μ-calpain and m-calpain, found in mammalian tissues. In the coding region of the bovine CAST gene (CAST) the new nucleotide sequence polymorphism was found being a substitution G→C at position 962 nt (consensus sequence-GenBank AF281256). Consensus of bovine CAST sequence with that of human revealed that G→C substitution was located at position 1460 nt of exon 12. Computer analysis of the mutation showed the Ser→Thr substitution for CAST protein. The frequency of alleles C and G was 0.41 and 0.59, respectively. The message from these results is that CAST gene may probably be considered as a candidate marker for beef quality.

  Leptin is encoded by obsese gene is an adipocyte-secreted cytokine. The main function of it is to regulate the balance of energy through the signal transduction pathway and it has a strong relationship with the function of reproduction, organism immune. PCR-SSCP and SYBGREEN Q-PCR was used to analyze the polymorphism of leptin gene and expression difference in 139 samples of Luxi (LX) cattle breeds. The association of variations of leptin gene with growth traits was analyzed. Some indexes of the individuals with genotype BB were higher than that with genotype AA and AB in LX breed such as the indexes of body length, heart length, body weight, hucklebone width, body height. Leptin express high in the white adipose tissue but there is little expression in the organ or the tissue such as heart, liver, kidney, spleen, lung and muscle. These results may be applied to Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) of Chinese LX cattle breeds improving the economic traits of cattle.
