  The morphometric status of the digestive tract of Heterobranchus bidorsalis juveniles exposed to graded concentrations of Bonny-Light Crude Oil (BLCO) was studied. The exposure of the fish to 1.00, 2.00, 4.00, 8.00 m L 1 and a control for 4 days toxicity period indicated that significant decreases (p< 0.05) in the widths and lengths of the Oesophagus (OES) Stomach (ST) and Intestine (INT) of the fish were BLCO concentrations dependent. Increased OES, ST and INT values noticed within the first 14 days of the recovery period implies that the removal of the oil pollutant from the ambient water chemistry probably rescucitated the component parts of the digestive tract of the fish both in length and in width. The magnitude of rescucitation of these component parts improved between day 14 (5%) and day 42 (15%). This implies that the ability of H. bidorsalis juveniles to recover their full and inherent capacity to utilize ingested food after water pollution is time dependent.

  The Acid Phosphate Concentration (APC) of the blood serum of adult Heterobranchus bidorsalis (mean weight, 138.24▒0.16 g) injected with graded concentrations of Bonny-light Crude Oil (BLCO) was studied. Two study spanned through 2 periods, the chronic toxicity (4 days) and the recovery (42 days) periods. Significant decreases (p< 0.01) in the acid phosphate concentration (g 100 mL 1) were recorded in the blood serum as BLCO concentrations in the fish increased from 10.00 to 50.00 ÁL g 1. Fish samples injected with 10 ÁL g 1 BLCO recorded highest values of serum acid phosphate than those injected with 20.00-50.00 ÁL g 1 BLCO. This situation was observed both at the chronic toxicity and the recovery periods. This result implies that an increase in BLCO infiltration into the fish blood might have impacted more negatively on the interaction of acid phosphate with the serum globular proteins (albumins and globulins) (enzymes) resulting in a reduction in APC values. Recorded increases in APC values during the recovery period suggested that the fish blood was apparently relieved of the toxic and lethal effects of the crude oil pollutant. The highest percent mortality recorded with the fish injected with 40.00 and 50.00 ÁL g 1 BLCO is consistent with the observations of other authors that pollutants induce stress and perturbations in the functional integrity of the physiological processes in fish, culminating in mortality.

  Studies were carried out to assess the proximate compositions of male and female Juveniles (JVs) and Yearlings (YRLs) of Heterobranchus bidorsalis exposed to graded concentrations (1.00-8.00 mL L 1) of Bonny-Light Crude Oil (BLCO). The experiment was monitored at 4 days (toxicity) and 42 days (recovery) periods. Significant decreases (p< 0.05) in the Crude Protein (CP) Ether Extract (EE) Ash (AS) and Dry Matter (DM) contents of both the JVs and YRLs were BLCO concentration dependent. Significant increases (p< 0.01) in the Nitrogen-Free-Extract (NFE) in the sex and age groups also depended on the concentrations of the oil pollutant. The lower CP, EE, AS and DM values of the male JVs and YRLs than those of their female counterparts implies that the crude oil compounds depleted these nutrients faster than in the males. This result is consistent with the reports of other workers who indicated that petroleum-related Aromatic Compounds (ACs) impacted harmful effects on fish species. These ACs might have caused higher decreases in the tissue triglyceride of the total lipid content (EE) of the male JVs and YRLs than those of their female counterparts. Significant increase in the NFE of the fish tissues might also have impacted high energy demand on the fish as a positive survival strategy against the crude oil stress.
