  Background and the purpose of the study: Date palms (Phoenix dactylifera L., Arecaceae) are one of the oldest cultivated plants which are used in folk medicine for treatment of various diseases. Due to the presence of antioxidant compounds in this plant and the role of oxidative stress in pathogenesis of chronic diseases, the aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents of date palm fruits extracts with water, methanol 50%, DMSO, and mixture of water-methanol-acetone-formic acid (20:40:40:0.1). Methods: Antioxidant activity of extracts were measured by two tests: inhibition of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power).
Results and major conclusion: Among 10 different varieties which were examined, the DMSO extract of Khenizi showed the highest antioxidant activity with the FRAP value of 3279.48 µmol/100 g of the dry plant and DPPH inhibitory percentage of 56.61%. DPPH scavenging radical and FRAP values of some varieties including Khenrizi, Sayer, Shahabi and Maktub showed a significant increase and were comparable to α-tocopherol (10 mg/L) when extracted by DMSO. Formic acid extract of Shahabi variety with 276.85 mg GAE/100 g of the dry plant showed the highest total phenolic content compared to other varieties. There was no correlation between accumulation of total phenol and antioxidant activity of extracts, explaining existence of other antioxidant components in date.

  Phytochemical and bioactivity studies of Teucrium persicum Boiss. have been investigated on the aerial parts of the plant. About 2 flavonoids, 5-hydroxy 3, 7, 4-trimethoxyflavone and 5-hydroxy 7, 3′, 4′-trimethoxyflavone were purified and identified from chloroform partition by spectroscopy methods. The crude extracts and isolated compounds were screened for their antioxidant activities using DPPH radical-scavenging, FRAP and Reducing power methods. Methanol extract and isolated flavonoids were found to be the most antioxidant active portions.

  Vinca minor L. (Apocynaceae) is a medicinal plant that has long been used to treat cerebral and memory disorders in European folk medicine. Furthermore, it contains more than 50 alkaloids, some of them having bisindole structure such as the antineoplastic alkaloids present in Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don (Apocynaceae). In this study, the plant’s alkaloid extract was divided into three fractions and the cytotoxic effects on cell proliferation of HT-29, Caco-2, T47D, and NIH/3T3 cell lines were examined. All alkaloid fractions showed a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on the cell lines. IC50 values confirmed that the growth and proliferation of NIH/3T3 cells were less affected in comparison to other cell lines.

  The crude extract and 4 fractions of aerial parts of cultivated motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca L.) were investigated for their total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities. The phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined using Folin-Ciocalteu assay and proposed assay of pharmacopeia where as antioxidant activity of samples were measured by 2 tests: DPPH and FRAP assays. Buthanolic fraction showed the highest antioxidant activity with the FRAP value of 1.735±0.07 μmol g-1 and DPPH inhibitory percentage of 57.76% μg mL-1 as well as the greatest phenolics content (48.37±3.76 mg of gallic acid equivalents g-1). The highest total flavonoid content was revealed in methanolic-aqueous fraction (50.21± 0.65 mg of hyperoside equivalents g-1). There was a direct correlation between total phenol and antioxidant activities which could introduce phenols as the main antioxidants of L. cardiaca L. extracts.

  Essential oils from the aerial parts of Teucrium persicum Boiss. (Labiatae), collected in 3 stages (pre-flowering, flowering and post-flowering) from plants grown in the Fars province of Iran were obtained by steam distillation. The chemical composition of the oils were analyzed by GC-MS. Analysis of the chemical profile of the isolated oils revealed the presence of >80 compounds, mainly sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. They contained α-terpinyl acetate, α-cadinene, 1,4-cadinadiene, linalool and cadinol. Average yield was 1%. The studied essential oils showed good antioxidant activities as calculated by 3 in vitro assays: DPPH radical scavenging, Ferric Reducing Power Assay (FRAP) and Reducing Power (RP).
