  African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, is a highly appreciated species for aquaculture. So, the present research was carried out to study the possibility of improving artificial reproduction of African catfish C. gariepinus brood stock by injection with some stimulating preparations. Females and males were divided into five treatments (T), each treatment had five females and two males, the females only were injected; T2, was injected with imported Pregnyl®; T3, was injected with imported Argent®; T4, was injected with native carp pituitary gland and T5, was injected with native catfish pituitary gland; but T1, set as a control, without injection. The obtained results revealed that the ovary length was significantly (p≤0.05) longer in T2, T3 and T4 than in T1 and T5. Also, T3 gave the highest Absolute Fecundity (AF), being 119917 and T2, T4 and T5 also represented higher AF, being 7.6, 7.8 and 3.9 times, respectively than T1. Yet, T3 gave the highest Relative Fecundity (RF), being 126.4 which was 8.5 times than T1. There were significant differences among treatments for serum FSH, LH and progesterone (P4) but not for estrogen. Treatment No. 2 reflected the highest (p≤0.05) level of FSH and LH among all treatments but P4 level in each of T2, T3 and T5 was significantly higher than T1 and T4. Histological examination of ovaries revealed normal structure of ovarian lamellae among all treatments and various development stages of oogenesis were observed. So, it could be concluded that T3 followed by T2 and T5 were the best treatments for improving the reproductive performance of C. gariepinus concerning the significantly heaviest egg weight and highest AF, RF, serum FSH, LH and P4 than T1 and T4.

  Fish are one of the most extensively distributed organisms in the aquatic environment. A field study was conducted for 102 days at feeding period. A 100 fish/net-Hapa (Nile tilapia, silver carp, common carp and African catfish) were stocked at a rate of 1: 1: 1: 1 using a polyculture system. Two experimental net-Hapa/treatment were used, one treatment as a control fish fed a commercial diet and the second one fish were fed a Dried Sewage Sludge (DSS), product of treating sanitary and agricultural drainage of Al-Reiad city, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt). At the end of the experiment, blood samples were withdrawn for measuring the hematological and serum biochemical parameters, also liver samples were taken from each fish species for histopathological examinations. From the obtained results, it was clear that DSS feeding did not negatively affect the blood picture in general, although the significantly elevated values of transaminases activity and triglycerides concentration. The DSS feeding led to some drastic histological alterations in the liver structure. Conclusively, the presence of some pollutants from agricultural and urban drainages whether in the rearing water or in DSS that can negatively affect fish health, production and quality as well as could be inter the food chain and threat human health; so, it is recommended to give more concern on food and water quality (environmental friendly) used in aquaculture to offer more safe products for human consumption.

  Medicinal herbs have curative powers and are used in making medicines because of their healing properties. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary graded levels (0, 1, 2 and 3% kg-1 diet) of both Dried Rocket (Eruca sativa) Leaves (DRL) or Seeds (DRS) on the growth performance, feed utilization, chemical composition of body and physiological parameters of all male monosex Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings for 8 weeks in indoor feeding experiment. A total of 168 fish with average initial body weight 17.14±0.35 g were randomly distributed into eight treatments referred No. T1, T2, T3 and T4 for DRL and T5, T6, T7 and T8 treatments for DRS. Results revealed that T4 and T7 were the best treatments which were responsible for the significantly (p≤0.05) increased growth performance, feed utilization, chemical composition of the whole fish body, blood hematological and biochemical parameters among all treatments. Dietary DRS gave the best results compared with DRL. Thus, it is recommended that the inclusion of 3% DRL (T4) or 2% DRS (T7) as feed additives of all male monosex O. niloticus are more useful for improving their growth performance, feed utilization, chemical composition of the whole fish body and physiological responses.

  The present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of a commercial probiotic Biogen® on growth performance, carcass composition, blood hematological and biochemical parameters, histometric characteristics of fish dorsal muscles and economic efficiency of mono-sex Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus under different stocking densities. Therefore, fish with similar body weight (12.71±0.17 g) were distributed randomly into seven treatments at different stocking densities, being 10 fish m-3 which fed a basal diet without Biogen® (T1), 10 fish m-3 (T2), 20 fish m-3 (T3), 30 fish m-3 (T4), 40 fish m-3 (T5), 50 fish m-3 (T6) and 60 fish m-3 (T7), which were fed the basal diet but supplemented with 3 g Biogen® kg-1 diet for 14 weeks. The obtained results indicated that T4 was the best treatment which realized significantly (p≤0.05) increases of all growth performance parameters (final weight, AWG, ADG and SGR), hematological parameters (hemoglobin, RBCs count, PCV, blood platelets and WBCs count), plasma proteins (total protein, albumin, globulin and albumin/globulin ratio), improved FCR, blood indices (MCV, MCH and MCHC), differentiation of leukocytes, carcass composition, histometric characteristics of fish dorsal muscles and best economic efficiency. There were no adverse effects on water quality criteria among all experimental treatments. Consequently, from the obtained results, it could be concluded that the inclusion of the commercial probiotic Biogen® at a level of 3 g kg-1 diet at stocking density rate of 30 fish m-3 of mono-sex Nile tilapia O. niloticus is useful to get the best fish performance with friendly effects on the environment.

  This experiment was conducted to study the effects of dietary chromium picolinate (Cr-Pic) on growth performance, carcass composition and internal organs indices of mono-sex Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings in an in-door 12-weeks trial. Fish with similar body weight (28.00±0.96 g) were distributed randomly into seven treatments at the same stocking density of 20 fish m-3, being the control fish group (T1) which was fed a basal diet free from supplemented Cr-Pic. Other fish groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with graded levels of Cr-Pic, being 200 ppb (T2), 400 ppb (T3), 600 ppb (T4), 800 ppb (T5), 1000 ppb (T6) and 1200 ppb (T7). The obtained results revealed that the dietary graded levels of Cr-Pic had no significant (p≥0.05) effects on growth performance, carcass composition and internal organs' indices of the experimental fish, but dietary Cr-Pic at 400 ppb (T3) led to significant (p≤0.05) increase in dry matter and crude protein of fish carcass compared with the control treatment and also the same treatment (T3) had significant increased of gonado-somatic index (GSI ♂, %) among all treatments.
