  Pipeline industry’s challenges and change are becoming diverse in the light of security, performance and profitability and they are vital issues for planning and decision-making. The study was designed to examine the cause of pipeline incidents in oil and gas industries in Nigeria. The data for the study were collected from pipeline operators in the oil and gas industries in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria. Thirteen causes of pipeline incidents were identified, the analysis of the respondents ranking shows that sabotage ranks top, followed by corrosion, equipment failure and mechanical impact.

  The effects of initial grain size on recrystallization and mechanical properties of steel was investigated using mild steel specimens at a different soaking temperature of 750, 850, 950 and 1050°C, respectively at holding time of 10 min for each specimen. The specimens were subjected to both impact test and tensile test to identify the effect of initial grain size on its mechanical properties. It was observed that the value of its initial grain size increases from 17-77 microns as the recrystallization temperature increases from 750-1050°C. It was also observed that the impact strength increased from 21.5-26.55J as the initial grain increases. Also, the percentage elongation and strain increases as the initial grain size increases from 7.7-10.55 and 0.08-0.11% but the values of ultimate stresses and yield stresses decreases from 6.27-5.28 and 4.46-3.70 MN m 2 as the initial grain size increase from 17-77 microns.

  The study was designed to investigate the use of work study techniques in major manufacturing industries in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling was done using seventy-three quoted companies from the major industrial zones in Nigeria. Questionnaire and interview techniques were used for collecting data for this study. Appropriate statistics were employed in the data analysis. It was found that majority of the manufacturing organizations know about work study techniques in their engineering and production activities as well as productivity improvement programme. The result of the survey revealed that a majority of the companies were not interested in the use of work study techniques due primarily to the lack of expertise knowledge, lack of necessary facilities, many engineering hours and substantial financial resources it requires. Necessary recommendations that must improve the use of the principles and tools of work study and enhance productivity of ventures are suggested.

  This research presents the effects of heat treatments on the mechanical properties of `mild steel. Sample of mild steel rods were subjected to the following heat treatment. Sample of these specimens were annealed at temperature of 100, 300 and 500°C while others were heated to 900°C and quenched in SAE 40 oil. Some of these specimens were retained as-quenched while others were tempered at temperature of 200, 400 and 600°C. The heat treated mild steel rod were then subjected to tensile, impact and torsional test the results of these tests show that stress and ultimate decreases as both annealing and tempering temperature increases. Also the percentage elongation increases as the annealing and tempering temperature increases. Moreover, the impact energy and the breaking torque increases as the tempering and the annealing temperature increases.
