Citric Acid Production by Aspergillus niger on Condensed Corn Distillers Solubles

Abstract: Seven strains of the fungus Aspergillus niger were screened for their ability to produce citric acid on the ethanol dry milling co-product condensed corn distillers solubles using surface fermentation. It was determined that citric acid production by A. niger strain ATCC 201122 was highest of the strains tested after 144 h of growth on condensed corn distillers solubles. This strain also exhibited the highest citric acid specific productivity and yield among the seven strains studied. In contrast, A. niger strains ATCC 10577 and ATCC 9029 produced the highest biomass levels on the condensed corn distillers solubles after 144 h.
