Research Concerning the Use of Regression Function in Gross Margin Forecast

Abstract: The paper aimed to predict gross margin based on milk yield. In this purpose, a sample of 33 dairy farms from Iasi, Buzau and Brasov Counties was used. The data were collected in the year 2008 and refer to average milk yield/cow/year, income/cow/year, and variable costs/cow/year. At sample level, the average milk yield was 4,498 kg/cow /year and gross margin Euro 1,246 /cow/year. A strong correlation was noticed between these two indicators, r = 0.783, and the linear regression function, y=252.117 + 0.221 x has been used in order to forecast gross margin for a milk yield scale ranging between 4498 kg - 7000 milk kg/cow/year. As a conclusion, for the increase of from 4,498 kg to 7,000, a farmer could get Euro 1799.117 gross margin, by Euro 553 higher compared to Euro 1246 registered for just 4498 kg/cow /year average milk production registered at present in the studied dairy farms.
