Hormones Transcription in the Testis of Blue Gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus, Pallas 1770) During Sexual Behavior

Abstract: The testis mRNA levels of b-follicle stimulating hormone (βFSH), b-luteinizing hormone (βLH), growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) of the mature male blue gourami (bg) (Trichogaster trichopterus sp.) were determined before and during sexual behavior (nest-building). The testis bgβLH mRNA level was significantly higher than that of bgβFSH and was more elevated before sexual behavior than during nest building and nursing of larvae. The bgPRL mRNA expression in the testes of males, which were building nests and nursing larvae, was significantly lower than that in inactive males. The mRNA levels of bgβFSH, bgβLH, bgGH and bgPRL in the pituitary were higher than they were in the testis. Thus, we propose that testis FSH, whose mRNA levels did not change significantly during sexual behavior, does not participate in spermatogenesis, in contrast to LH, which does. The bgGH and bgPRL mRNA transcription levels changed in the testis only slightly during sexual behavior. Nevertheless, these hormones may still take part in reproduction.
