Impact of Nosema mylitta (pebrine) Infection on the Larval Parameters, Protein Concentration and Total Hemocyte Level in Daba Ecorace of Antheraea mylitta D. (Tropical Tasar silkworm)

Abstract:
Tasar culture is the livelihood for the tribal peoples of north eastern India. The pebrine (Nosema mylitta) disease is becoming major constraint for the production of tasar in India. The aim of the present study was to analyze the impact of N. mylitta on the larval parameters, biochemical and cellular changes on tropical tasar silkworm. The newly hatched larvae of daba ecorace of tropical tasar were inoculated with pebrine spores orally. The fresh larval weight was recorded at different time intervals to analyze the impact of Nosema on larvae. The biochemical status of the infected and healthy larvae was analyzed by Total Haemocytes Count (THC) and total proteins. The results revealed that, significant increase in the fresh larval weight not noticed in healthy larva (2.77 g±0.37) in comparison with infected larva (2.52 g±0.37) from 240 h post inoculation (hpi). From the early hours of inoculation, the significant reduction in the total protein level was noticed in the infected larvae. Maximum reduction in Protein concentration was noticed during 144 hpi in healthy larva (1.72±0.23) when compared with infected larva (0.44±0.57). In contrast, the total Haemocytes numbers were increased in the infected ones when compared to healthy worms. Maximum hameocytes were noticed in infected larva (24524±571) in contrast to healthy larva of IIIrd Instar (18953±371). Based on the results obtained in the present study, the increased total haemocyte numbers and reduction in the protein concentration can be used for the markers for pebrine infection in tasar silkworm.
