Real-time Scheduling for Multimedia Services in IEEE 802.16 Wireless Metropolitan Area Network

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a new technology of WMAN (Wireless Metropolitan Area Network) whose specification was defined by IEEE 802.16 and supports the Quality of Service (QoS) for Media Access Control (MAC) layer. This study aims at the real-time scheduling of multimedia service to meet the demands of QoS in WMAN. Although, there have been three scheduling algorithms, Earliest Deadline First (EDF), Round-Robin (RR) and Weighted-Fair Queuing (WFQ) mostly adopted by many studies that are about scheduling of service class, it can not provide a good distribution for resources under complex conditions to meet user required QoS. Therefore, an efficient scheduler is very important for IEEE 802.16 to support QoS. This study proposes a novel scheduling scheme which combines with the Connection Admission Control (CAC) and the existing EDF(k) scheduling under Point to Multipoint (PMP) operation mode to resolve the scheduling of real-time multimedia. This study takes the dropping rate of multimedia transmission into account for the design of scheduling of real-time multimedia, because we will confront the transmission demand of real-time High Definition (HD) video for multimedia in the future and then the impact on data dropping will become important due to increasing demands of data transmission. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can reduce more average latency to meet stricter deadline criteria than the original EDF scheduling. Furthermore, the proposed scheme can achieve better QoS with less resource for the point of view of system.
