Screening of Sugarcane Varieties Against Borers Infestation in Peshawar Valley I. Plant Crop
S. A. Kakakhel , S. K. Khalil and Ahmad Jan

Abstract: None of the twenty five varieties of sugarcane tested were completely resistant to the attack of stem and root borers. They were grouped into three categories based on the borer infestation: (A) fairly resistant (CP 77/400, US 59/161, CP 67/417, Mex 56/1324 and PSA 132) which showed an overall lower infestation of 8.25-12.30 per cent. All these varieties gave a very good yield (68-88 tons ha -1) cane yield, (8-11.73 tons ha -1) sugar yield and 11.75-13.26 per cent commercial cane sugar (CCS), except CP 67/417 which gave a poor yield, (B) moderately resistant with 13.24-18.96 per cent borer infestation. In this group cvs. Mex 54/81, CP 70/1133, CP 67/37, CP 75/1082, CP 72/1215 and CP 70/1527 gave a cane yield of 68 tons ha -1, 8.63-10.73 tons ha -1 sugar and 11.25-13.50 per cent CCS and (C) susceptible group included N 50/21, CP 70/1547, CP 71/1086 and CP 66/473 showing an infestation of 19.96-28.30 per cent with poor yields, except CP 70/1547 which gave comparatively better. Root borer showed maximum infestation compared to stem borer among the tested varieties.
