Tanweer Zafar and Rubina Rafiq

Abstract: During the taxonomic studies in Echinops of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. It is suggested that the genus in the area can be divided into three sections. Delimiting characters are involucral bracts, which surrounds the achenes and the florests, which plays the defensive role. Outer bracts have been transferred into the hairs; inner layers are linear, narrow and spathulate, bracts having varied size. Fifteen species in Pakistan in three sections, include the Oligolepis Bunge, Echinops L, Ritropis Greuter Rech.f. Six additions and new species have been reported from Pakistan i.e. E. gedrosiacus Borm, E. sulaimanii Rech. f, E. panthanorum Rech. f, E. chloreleucus. Rech. f, E. leucographus Bunge, E. orientalis Truv. and E. jutial Sp. nova. T. Akhtar.
