Abstract: Effect of the ethanol extract of seed of Telfairia occidentalis in rat was evaluated. 100, 250, 500 and 1000 mg kg-1 of the extract was orally administered daily to four different groups of Wistar albino rats (127±13 g) for 28 days. The fifth group of rats (i.e., control) received saline water only. On the 29th day blood was collected from the overnight fasted rats through cardiac puncture under chloroform anaesthesia. Appropriate commercial (RandoxR) kits were used to analyze the blood serum for the following enzymes and biomolecules: Aspartatetransaminase (ASAT), alaninetransaminases (ALAT), alkaline phosphatase, total cholesterol, High density lipoproteins (HDL), Triglyceride (TG), creatinine, total proteins, total and conjugated bilirubin and glucose. The extract significantly increased the serum levels of total cholesterol, total proteins, total bilirubin, conjugated bilirubin and glucose; but decreased the levels of HDL.
