Fluorescence and HPLC-Based Standardization of Piper nigrum Fruits
S. C. Jain, E. Menghani and R. Jain

Abstract: Piper nigrum Linn., its market samples (I and II) and adulterants were studied for generation of fluorescence markers and HPLC fingerprints. P. nigrum pet. ether extract under 365 nm exhibited lemon yellow fluorescence in contrast to C. papaya with blue fluorescence. HPLC profile of methanolic extracts of P. nigrum have characteristic peaks at various retention time (rt). Resolution value of P. nigrum genuine (0.09), market sample 1 (0.06), market sample 2 (0.11) and C. papaya (0.06) was calculated. These results with high resolution value of market samples are closer to C. papaya value, thus, indicative of adulteration. From the present studies it is revealed that fluorescence and HPLC methods provide specific, accurate, sensitive and reproducible markers/fingerprints in the authentication checks their purity, quality and control.
