Abstract: The laser has recently been used as a new treatment method for removal of Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) symptoms and signs. The current study was aimed to evaluate the impact of CO2 laser therapy on OLP lesions. All the details of this study were designed and implemented according to the preferred reporting items for PRISMA. Seven databases were used for searching the articles, including MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Science Direct, Scopus, EBSCO and DOAJ. Only the articles written in English were included in the study. Seven out of 476 papers were eligible for systematic review according to the determined parameters. Intragroup analyses of CO2 laser indicated that the lesion size and pain level were reduced significantly after laser therapy. Further, the findings of studies with drug comparison groups showed that laser exerted a significantly greater impact than drug. The effects of CO2 laser on OLP were reported to be significant in both short-term and long-term follow-ups compared with other control groups. However, further studies are required to be conducted with standards of randomized controlled clinical trials and standardized measurement of results with reliable severity scoring tools.
