Abstract: Safety of blood and blood products is of global concern in transfusion medicine especially as it concerns the transfusion of transmissible infections. This review was undertaken to determine the prevalence of haemoparasites in blood donors. A narrative approach was adopted and findings from previous works related to this review was collated and utilized which covers 5 haemoparasites: Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease), Babesia (Babesiosis), Parasitaema (Malaria), Leishmania (Leishmaniasis) and Toxoplasma carried out at different regions of the world. In this review paper, results collated from several studies of researchers revealed that malaria parasites (32.5%) were more prevalent in blood donors with Plasmodium falciparum species showing the highest prevalence, then followed by Dipetalonema perstans (15.6%) and microfilaria (1.3%) in Nigeria. In other countries like Mexico, Greece, America and Brazil, Toxoplasma (74%) was more prevalent, followed by Leishmania (15.2%), Babesia (3.7%) and Trypanosoma cruzi (0.15%), respectively. This review shows relative moderate prevalence of haemoparasites in blood donors and hence risks of transfusion transmission infections to recipients because of inadequate screening of blood donors for haemoparasites. To reduce the risk of haemoparasite transmission, good microscopy carried out by an experienced scientist in a resource limited setting is necessary. Also, advanced blood donor screening examinations like: enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) system, immunofluorescence assays can be carried out. This is to ensure safe blood donation and transfusion practice.
