Abstract: Background and Objective: Parotidectomy procedure has been associated with high postoperative surgical complications in canine patients. This study aimed to address new trends in the parotidectomy technique that may minimize parotidectomy related postoperative complications and improve the surgical outcomes in dogs. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on five clinically healthy dogs. A V-shaped skin incision was made below the base of the ear and extended downward for 6-7 cm. The V-shaped skin was dissected and reflected dorsally. The lobulation of the gland and its borderlines were identified. The gland was dissected by sharp and blunt dissection. The resultant dead space was occupied by a sterile gelatin sponge. The wound was closed over the gelatin sponge. Dogs were kept under clinical observation. Results: No deaths or severe complications were recorded intraoperatively or postoperatively. The skin incision over the parotid gland in the V-shape and revealing the gland lobulation made the technique easier, safer and less traumatized to related structures. The use of the gelatin sponge prevented exudate or transudate formation and enabled the wounds to heal by the first intention. Conclusion: These new trends may minimize parotidectomy related postoperative complications and improve surgical outcomes in dogs.
