Thermodynamic and Polymeric Inhibitors Effects on Methane Gas Hydrate Formation

Abstract:
The formation of gas hydrates during hydrocarbon production and transportation is a serious problem in the oil and gas industry. Using hydrate inhibitors due to their thermodynamic or kinetic effects, delay the process of hydrate formation. In this study, effects of various thermodynamic inhibitors such as methanol, triethylene glycol and calcium chloride and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as kinetic inhibitor on time of methane gas hydrate formation and inhibition of different inhibitor dosage have been studied. Experimental results show kinetic inhibitors have better performance on methane hydrate inhibition and increasing nucleation time. In addition polyethylene oxide polymer causes the increase of efficiency of kinetic inhibitors.
