Comparison of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) Morphological and Electrophoretic Characteristics in the Southern Coast of the Caspian Sea

Khosrow J. Khalili and A. Keramat Amirkolaie
This study is to determine whether genetic make up and morphometric charactereristics of common carp in the southern cost of the Caspian Sea are altered by farmed fish and environment. Three sampling stations based on two different environments (large differences in salinity and temperature) and relation to carp farms were selected; Anzali lagoon, Ghareh so and Bandar gas. In each sampling site totally 180 fish (during 3 sampling sessions) were caught for blood sampling and morphometric measurement. Biochemical polymorphism was studied by standard methods of vertical electrophoresis in polyacrylamid gel. The result showed that the genetic-make up of sampled fish differ between three stations. In Ghareh so, BB was the only identified transferrin genotype. However, in Anzali lagoon there were identified two types of transferrn genotype; BB and BC. Heterozygoty ratio and variation in morphometric parameters were larger in Anzali lagoon compared to both Ghareh so and Bandar gaz. In conclusion, common carp are showing different characteristics throughout the Southern cost of the Caspian Sea. This change was more obvious in Anzali station probably due to a bigger number of fish farms.
