Yield and Nutritional Profile of Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) Cultivar Hays: Implications for the Livestock Nutrition

Abstract:
Background and Objective: The yield and nutritional values of groundnut hay, frequently used in animal feed by local breeders, are unknown. This study aimed to determine the yield and nutrient characteristics of hay from five groundnut cultivars collected from Korhogo department. Materials and Methods: After these groundnut cultivars regenerating according to Fisher block design and groundnut pods harvesting, hay yields were estimated and ten nutrient compounds from hay samples were determined at the laboratory. The collected data were analyzed with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) under Statistica version 7.1 software at the risk threshold of 5%. Likewise, Excel office 2010 software was used to produce the graphics. Results: The cultivar PA14 recorded higher hay yield value. Significant differences between groundnuts cultivars were recorded from dry matter, ash, total sugar, reducing sugar, total carbohydrate, protein and lipid contents in hays. The cultivars PA14, PA11 and PA13 provided the highest beneficial energy values of hays for livestock nutrition. Higher values of antinutrient compounds such as oxalate and phytate were found in hay samples for PA14, PA11 and PA13 cultivars. Conclusions: It appears that some groundnut cultivar hays from Korhogo are advisable for animal nutrition but in the dried or transformed form after antinutrients compounds (oxalate and phytate) volatilization under heat treatment.
