Umblachery cattle was assessed genetically using 25 microsatellite markers, as recommended by FAO. The number of alleles was ranging from 2 to 6 with a mean of 4.0±0.11. The mean number of effective alleles were 2.91±0.09. The allele sizes were ranging from 94 to 300 bp with the frequency distribution of 0.0111 to 0.9375. The estimated heterozygosity value was high 0.6139±0.02 and the PIC was 0.5625±0.03 and the loci screened were polymorphic and overall mean FIS value (-0.0487) suggested the excess of heterozygosity in the population. |

A study was conducted to assess the influence of certain genetic and non-genetic factors on the birth weight and to estimate the genetic and phenotypic parameters of birth weight in crossbred calves raised under organized farm conditions. The data on performance record of 713 calves born over a period of 11 years from 1995-2005 at Cattle Breeding Farm, Thumburmuzhy, Kerala was statistically analyzed using the mixed model least square and Maximum likelihood computer program PC-2 of Harvey. The least square mean for birth weight of calves was found to be 27.83±0.48 kg. The male calves (28.50 kg) were found to be heavier than the female calves (27.16 kg). |

The carcass characteristics of Attappady black goats reared under the high range field conditions of Kerala in India were studied. A total of 30 animals randomly purchased from various places of the home tract of the breed were slaughtered at the Meat Technology Unit of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Thrissur for evaluation study of the carcass. Out of 30 animals 10 each (5 males and 5 females) belonged to 6, 9 and 12 months of age. The live weight was recorded at the time of purchase as well as just before slaughter to find out the transport/fasting loss. The weight of carcass and non-carcass components of each animal was recorded to study the dressing percentage. At the time of purchase, average live weights of males belonging to 6, 9 and 12 months of age were 14.6, 18.0 and 20.8 kg, respectively and the corresponding values were 13.6, 16.0 and 20.6 in females. The transport loss was the lowest for animals at 12 months of age (8.65% for males and 9.22% for females) and highest for animals at 6 months of age (10.96% for males and 10.29% for females). The dressing percentage was maximum at 6 months of age (43% for males and 42.96% for females) followed by animals at 12 months of age (42.83% for males and 41.425 for females). The percentages of non-carcass components like blood, hide, head and cannons, lungs, organs and stomach and intestine were also individually recorded. The study revealed that dressing percentage was the highest in goats of 6 month age groups even though the transport loss was more compared to other groups and hence it is recommended that the Attappady black goats can be slaughtered at the age of 6 months for better economic returns. |

A study was conducted to assess the suitability of different crosses of rabbit breeds as efficient meat producers in the subtropical climatic conditions of Kerala India. Three rabbit breeds viz., White Giant (WG), Soviet Chinchilla (SC) and Grey Giant (GG) maintained at the University Rabbit Farm, Centre for Advanced Studies in Animal Genetics and Breeding, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy were utilized for the study. Body weight and growth records of F1 progeny were taken at birth, 2nd and 4th week of age. Data on pre-weaning body weight and growth rates of 562 pure and crossbred kits was subjected to least squares analysis of variance. Among the purebreds, highest pre-weaning body weights at birth, 2nd and 4th week were recorded for WG. Among crossbreds and purebreds progenies of WG male crossed to GG female (WG x GG) recorded the highest pre-weaning weight at 2nd and 4th week. Birth weight was highest for WG x SC crosses. The growth rates during 0-2, 2-4 and 0-4 weeks were 9.16, 11.76 and 10.50 g, respectively. Based on the results obtained in the study it was concluded that the genetic group of the rabbits had highly significant (p<0.01) influence on pre-weaning body weights as well as growth rates. |

A study was undertaken to assess the socioeconomic status of the goat farmers of the Malabar region of Kerala. The study was conducted at three centers of the All India Coordinated Research Project for the improvement of Malabari goat viz. Thanur, Vadakara and Thalassery. Information were collected through personal enquiry and questionnaire developed at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Animal Genetics and Breeding, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Kerala from a total of 2146 randomly selected goat farmers consisting of 685, 587 and 874 farmers from Thanur, Vadakara and Thalassery centers, respectively. The results revealed that majority are marginal farmers with a land holding of <50 cents. Nearly 92% of the heads of the families were educated and 15% of them had high school level education and above. The average monthly income of the majority of the goat farmers was 501-2000 rupees and the average income from agriculture and animal husbandry was 248.60 and 198.23 rupees, respectively. Majority of the farmers (55.73%) had a tiled house with concrete flooring. Females are mainly engaged in goat rearing. Majority of the farmers (66%) listen to the radio/television programmes and equal number of them access to training classes and almost all of them are interested to learn more if classes are arranged. |
