The goal of this study was to determine the safety dosage of anaesthetic Quinaldine Sulphate (QS) alone and together with a muscle relaxant, Diazepam (D) on Convict cichlid, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum (0.54±0.01 g) juveniles for ornamental fish sector. The trial showed that the QS with D administration significantly increased the anaesthesia level in the Convict cichlid. The fish entered light anaesthesia at 9.75 ppm QS+0.5 ppm D (0.83±0.02 min). Moreover, a deep anaesthesia level was reached at 9.75 ppm QS+1 ppm D (1.20±0.09 min) as compared to 13 ppm of QS (6.40±0.28 min). When used together with QS and D eliminated the excitement and hyperactivity of the fish compared to QS alone. In addition, no mortality occurred in any anaesthesia levels except high concentrations (40-54 ppm QS). This study indicate that the advisable light and deep phases of anaesthesia for experimental treatments, handling, immobilization and transportation of the convict cichlid juveniles were achieved with dosages of 9.75 ppm QS+0.5 ppm D and 9.75 ppm QS+1 ppm D, respectively.

This study was conducted to compare effects of aquria made of glass or fiberglass on growth and pigmentation in goldfish, Carassius auratus (initial weight of 8.1 g) and electric yellow cichlid, Labidochromis caeruleus (initial weight of 0.47 g) for a rearing period of 80 days. Skin colour assessment was performed by reflectance spectroscopy with transformation into colour parameters based on tristimulus values, L (lightness), a (redness) and b (yellowness). A lower L and a higher a, b was obtained on skin of goldfish reared in fiberglass aquarium compared to those in glass one (p<0.05) while no differences were observed among L, a and b of electric yellow cichlid reared in glass or fiberglass aquarium (p>0.05). Growth performance, feed conversion ratio and survival ratio in both species were not affected by the aquarium types (p>0.05). Aquarium made of fiberglass should be preferred for goldfish rearing as skin colour is significantly improved in this media.

This study was conducted to determined the total carotenoid concentration of different body parts of green tiger shrimp (Penaeus semisulcatus), kuruma shrimp (Penaeus japonicus), speckled shrimp (Metapenaeus monoceros), blue crab (Callinectus sapidus), red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) and red mullet (Mullus barbatus) caught from the coast of the Eastern Mediterranean in February and October. The carotenoid levels of head, shell and whole body of all animals were higher in October than those in February while their muscle carotenoids were not affected by seasons, except for kuruma shrimp and speckled shrimp. Amounts of carotenoids were highest in the head, decreasing in shell (or skin) and muscle. Average total carotenoid concentration among body parts of species ranged from 16.19-55.44 mg kg-1 in green tiger shrimp, 16.77-74.92 mg kg-1 in kuruma shrimp, 17.24-66.36 mg kg-1 in speckled shrimp, 6.41-14.34 mg kg-1 in blue crab, 1.37-28.77 mg kg-1 in red porgy and 1.30-39.26 mg kg-1 in red mullet. These values are quite high compared to other sea foods. Since, coloration plays an important role in consumer preference, it would be advantageous to fish these animals in October rather than February.
